Indonesia: New Law Banning Unmarried Sex May Affect Travelers

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. I would walk right back out of the door... and smear it all over Trip Advisor et al... (once I had left the country)

She would have been concerned about appearances probably but khalwat only applies to two muslims.

“(1) Any -
(a) man who is found together with one or more women, not being his wife or wives or mahram; or
(b) woman who is found with one or more men, not being her husband or mahram,
in any secluded place or in a house or room under circumstances which may give rise to suspicion that they are engaged in an immoral act shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding three thousand ringgit or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years or to both.”

This is all very true but don't forget our western culture was pretty harsh on adulterers, gays, prostitutes etc
until quite recently.
Society shunned them, the law imprisoned them, and the cops beat them up. Proudly.
In my lifetime.

In many western countries you could get serious years in gaol for smoking a joint twice, until almost yesterday..
Gaol is where we put our mentally ill today. Be especially wary if you are black or poor.
And if you get old they gonna warehouse you in a institution seperate from society for sure, called a "retirement home".

England even went so far as to send bread pilferers and handkerchief thieves, petty crimes of survival, to Australia not that long ago. How cruel is that!!

We shouldn't get too cocky on the subject of locking people up..

Ok, judgements aside, what does this mean for western travelers ? Will unmarried couples be forced to stay in separate rooms ? Will the lady at the desk be asking for your wedding license ?
I have traveled in Muslim countries as part of an unmarried couple, but that was a long time ago, before this recent wave of conservatism. And Turkey and Morocco were fairly tolerant.
I' d be interested in hearing people' s experiences of traveling unmarried in countries that are strictly Muslim.

I was in Malaysia two weeks ago with the 17 year old girl in my family who looks 12 or 13 and we stayed in KL and Georgetown hotels ,, traveled in busses, taxis and trains and was never asked any questions or given any dirty looks even when visiting her auntie in a high security prison.

Bad accusations can start with people with bad thoughts.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

OK, some good points here but I don't think adultery was against the law and cops did not beat up adulterers anywhere. Laws against paid-for sex were patchy, it's never been criminalised in many countries (although some related activities were made illegal such as solicitation, pimping etc).
In any case, the point is we have stopped the barbarism in the modern age.

You can make the moral and faith argument and we do so here in the west. But i think tolerance of different perspective is vital to growth and a sustainable society.

I just hope peeps in indonesia will reconaider the global implications... So sad 😭😭

Wanted to check out indonesia too
