Impending Violence in Phnom Penh

Post by Joker Poker »

Those who've been around for a couple of years or longer will remember the strip of spit roast restaurants on St 13 just near Wat Ounalom.

http://www.cambodiadaily.com/archives/r ... ants-1568/

There were a bunch of more or less identical restaurants there that featured spit roast calves and cheap beer. Nothing flash, they were all dirty, roach infested shitholes to be polite.

Anyway, they were all forced to stop displaying spit calves because of the great evil they spawned and then the few that survived ultimately closed down when their leases expired and were duly knocked down.

Well, in evermore creative Phnom Penh I was curious what the two new restaurants there would be doing. I walked past just yesterday afternoon, and to my absolute horror, there was a calf on a spit!

Everyone knows how violent things got after they closed so be warned, things are not looking good.

I'd post a photo, but that would be a bit reckless.

Yeah, I remember. Also remember that they had to close because some foreigners found it inappropriate. Never understood the whole fuss about that spit calves - was delicious. Countries all over the world offer spit calves.

Do Not open spoiler if you don't like spit calves

I remember the decree to close down those spit-roasting places. I don't recall much violence surrounding those closures. I assume the violence came from the affected owners of those places?
I have always found the meat to be too dry from those places anyway.

Ahh, that's because they have never learned how to create a good red wine sauce.

They closed because foreigners didn't like it?! No, they closed because of some decree and monks saying it was un-Buddhist or something like that. I don't think foreigners had anything to do with that. Khmer officials thought it looked bad...

Also possible. Yes, this "political monks" that don't have the slightest clue about Buddhism are a kind of problem in Cambodia. Perhaps the monks of Wat Onalum should stop beating up beggars that roam the streets around the Wat with sticks and clubs before talking about un-Buddhistic oxen.

The familiar sight of cow torsos slowly turning on rotisseries in front of Phnom Penh’s restaurants and beer gardens will soon be a distant memory if government officials have their way.

As of yesterday, however, owners of outdoor dining establishments in the capital were continuing to grill cows in front of their shops despite a notification issued by the Council of Ministers last month that advised people not to grill cows publicly or openly at restaurants and markets.

The notification, signed on January 10 by Council of Ministers secretary of state Sim Vanna, states that grilling cows in public or in front of shops displayed a “cruel activity” which was in contravention of Buddhist principles of non-violence.

Staff at several restaurants near Wat Odnalom pagoda told the Post they had received information from local authorities about the notice and observed it for several days, before reinstating the cows outside due to concerns that it would hurt their business...

The notification from the Council of Ministers was issued after a congress in Phnom Penh in December at which Buddhist monks requested that the government take action on the grilling of cows in public streets.

"While the monk was guiding the British woman to see caves on the top of Phnom Sam Pov mountain, he raped her," Mey Chhengly said. The monk had allegedly confessed to the crime, he added.

Thorn Sophoan was defrocked immediately after his arrest and police are compiling documents so they can prosecute the man, who faces up to 25 years behind bars if convicted of rape, Mey Chhengly said.
