dec-feb are usually the busiest 3 months i think, but with the mass hordes of tourists that bypass SHV now and go straight to the Islands its kinda of hard to notice much difference between high and low season i find

Quite a few downtown restaurants are suffering from a very slow high season start.
Victory hill seems quiet. I didn't go to Otres for a while but I would guess that Otres 1 is also on a slow start. Maybe someone with a real feed back can tell better.
Always a good indicator, Samudera seems also less busy than last year. Actually my feeling is that there seems to be more expats and less tourists in the shop. Which is very subjective feeling surely.
If western tourists are going straight to the islands, the main concern that was voiced to me by those who complained was the very noticeably diminished buying power buoyed by the Russian tourists.

Koh Rong was full for the holiday, quite busy now. KR Samloem seems to be the one to watch now, a lot more going on there this season. I've seen a few snowbirds return, not huge numbers of tourists about. Christmas everyone is fully booked when I went round looking, so it should be busy.

For the last 2 years, high season really didn't kick in until Boxing Day ( December 26 for you non-Ozzies and Poms).
This year, there has been a definite start in the last 2 or 3 weeks and it is ramping up day by day.
As always, the businesses that are badly run and don't understand how to target a particular demographic other then the .50c beer crowd,, are whinging and saying its terrible. They won't last, as usual The businesses that are actually run as businesses are doing OK at the moment.
No complaints here, the best and earliest start I've seen in 2 years.

and yeah Koh Rong and that have really hit off the past couple of years, people just go straight to the pier to catch a boat to the islands, some might stay a night and catch the morning boat, the pier is constantly full during high season, i think some people are starting to take notice of koh ta kiev as well, i think that will be one of the next ones to shoot up
Koh Rong Samloens apparently a lot more built up than since i last went 3 years ago, i think there was only 3-4 small "resorts" (groups of bungalows) i stayed at the eco "resort" in one of their tents, that whole bay is beautiful and untouched, will be a shame if it gets ruined

As hotdigr says, It varies from business to business.
We are pretty much full and have been since 21 November (water festival and beyond). We are almost fully booked from 26 Dec to 6 January already.
Last year December was slow, especially the first part and as hotdigr says the season does not appear to usually kick off solidly until 26 December. That said we have bookings already for the same level of occupancy we had for the whole of December last year.
But it varies, The Small Hotel is full like us and others are half empty at the moment.
Hotels have benefited from what I estimate to be around 1,000 rooms disappearing from the broader market with the Chinese.
However there are more bars and eateries than ever, so many (especially new places) will continue to struggle.
A good barometer is Pub Street, a couple of places are busy, most just ticking over and a couple are closed or virtually so. Similarly at the Square.
It is still raining here, occasionally it did this morning. Last year the last rains were the first weekend in December, so soon they should stop.
However it still remains Paradise Sur Mer, so come on down (just make sure you have a booking between Christmas and New Year or over Chinese New Year).
