Re: How do you ride/drive differently in Cambodia?
I started driving a tuktuk here in the hot months, some years ago - I couldn't work out what the clustering was going on around me at the lights (those that actually stop for the lights, i.e. when there's tea-money boleeh at the intersection) but it turned out to be pretty simple. The moto riders would all wait under the shade of a tree, whether it was just near the lights, or 20m back. Now when I ride my moto I do the same.explorer wrote: ↑Wed Dec 26, 2018 4:29 pmSometimes on sunny days, on roads with very little traffic, I ride on the side with the most shade.StroppyChops wrote: ↑Wed Dec 26, 2018 3:04 pm... right side of the road, middle of the road, either "side-walk", through markets, through private properties, through flood waters...

When in Rome. I adapted to drive in a similar fashion to the way everyone else drives. If you were to try to drive like we do in the west, you would cause an accident. Driving is about how you anticipate the other drivers to behave, and I find the flow works surprisingly well for the most part, even though it was at first alarming to witness. Now, I do what they do, as that's what they expect me to do, and it just seems to magically work.

I keep getting 12 year olds trying to race me, just let them pass, It's a wonder there is anyone still alive on the roads here, total madness, been here about six months and seen about 5 collisions, two of them involving myself in Tuk Tuk's, they crash into each other, look a little bemused and then get up off the road and carry on, they appear to not have the ability to learn from mistakes, very strange !!!!!

Yep. Driving here is like being brought up in a rough council estate. show weakness and die. Drive as aggressively as them and frighten them into submission. They pretend they are not looking but they soon break if you push harder, unless they are on the phone......RickyBobby wrote: ↑Sun Feb 24, 2019 5:03 am When in Rome. Yeah, a khmer friend of mine's policy is 'never stop'. Well nearly always unless the car is bigger than you or for lights.. But hesitate and show lack of confidence and you will have a hard time on the roads on a moto here.pczz wrote: ↑Sun Feb 24, 2019 9:25 pmYep. I am having more trouble with idiots on push bikes than cars at the moment! they should not be allowed in big cities, unless they are on cycle lanes to keep them out of everyones way

Maybe in another 50 years they will start to understand that it's a good idea to look ( Or even glance) before pulling out of a junction, until then they will inevitably just keep getting killed and wondering why, I find it hard to understand that without decent healthcare they are so unconcerned about their safety, in UK at least if you behave like an idiot you still get free healthcare, here you have to pay, I would have thought that would mean you are more careful, but not here !!!!

I guess it works if you replace "Camelot" with "Cambodia".
On the other hand, "Camelote" means "cheap knock-off" in French. I wonder why. Did the story of the famous aquatic pantomime with fairies and swords sounded a bit cheap to our ears ? Maybe... But i digress...
