How do you get around town?
Re: How do you get around town?
I am not surprised, happens everywhere. Country bumbkins being ripped by city slickers but people like the traditional even when it doesnt make sense. Chicken foot syndrome. Go to the market and buy chicken breast for $2 or 4 scrawny chicken feet for $3 and they buy the chicken feet. Khmer who cannot read and write or cannot afford a smartphone don't really have the option of using an app. And everyone has been predicting the death of the cyclo for years. And tuks are bigger than those horrible little yellow coffins (which i will not get in), and you can't smoke in a taxi. They will live on for a while yetrogerrabbit wrote: ↑Wed Jan 24, 2018 1:36 pmYep, this is what I have seen and heard too. Even the locals who live in city and do not have the regular tuktuk, goes through the same haggling process and still end up paying more than the passapp prices would be. That why many locals actually use now days tuktuk apps too.Gardiguy wrote: ↑Wed Jan 24, 2018 8:50 amI call on Khmer not getting ripped off by the tuk tuks. And of course Khmer do not pay tuks anything like as much as passsp costs. so passap is a luxury for non-tourists

Just as well there are red ones and white ones as well then. I'm not sure what your problem is with them. Fast to turn up and cheap to use. Perfect for one or two people with a small amount of baggage. Try getting a regular tuk tuk to the airport for under $5.

Just because they are small and claustrophobic. I don't even like getting in a lift. I have never had a problem with tuks in 8 years. Thailand yes, all the time and the thieving bastard taxi drivers too, but not here. If they don't want to do it for my price there will be a queue of them waiting behind. the old days of taxi gangs and fixed prices is long gone in pp, except maybe at bus stations.timmydownawell wrote: ↑Wed Jan 24, 2018 4:31 pmJust as well there are red ones and white ones as well then. And those little kamikaze gas bombs are too small. We are usually 4 people. They are driven just as recklessly by the same idiots who used to have tuks. They should have a rule. if the driver goes wrong way down a one way street or jumps the light you don't pay the fare

Agreed, I have been comparing what I pay to the missus and the apps are considerably cheaper than her. Especially later in the evening/night when TukTuks double their prices but the app is the same. I understand in groups of 4 it may be worthwhile getting a normal TukTuk (when they don't raise the price massively because there are 4 people). It is also possible to get 4 in the app ones, at a squeeze .rogerrabbit wrote: ↑Wed Jan 24, 2018 1:36 pmYep, this is what I have seen and heard too. I just walk. No arguments, no hassle. OK, I do take transportation to the airport but pretty much hoof it everywhere else.

Same,Same here. In fact I think the only argument and hassle I have is when your blocking the footpath in front of me doing the market shuffle.

Smartphones are cheap these days, way cheaper than a rudimentary Nokia or Motorola was 10 years ago. Even the cleaning ladies where I work have them. I see a lot of those Indian style Bajaj moto-rickshaws around now, and most of the time it's in areas where there are few foreigners and locals are using them. Those Bajaj's are a lot more structurally solid than any trailer-style tuk-tuk too. I've had enough of bullshit arguments with drivers so I generally only get guys I know. I've had that Passapp for a few months but haven't even tried it yet to be honest.pczz wrote: ↑Wed Jan 24, 2018 3:41 pm Khmer who cannot read and write or cannot afford a smartphone don't really have the option of using an app. And everyone has been predicting the death of the cyclo for years. Re: How do you get around town?
maybe they are cheaper, but still beyond most of the people in my village except old cheapstuff. Most people still got the nokias and maybe 1 or 2 people in each family has a smart phone as well, so they are always arguing over whose turn it is to play angrybirds . I just changed my phone today. Only had 8mb and was full , so I couldn't have added pasap and uber and god knows how many others even if I wanted tos. Not sure now but most of the poorer ones I know don't have a playstore account. The phone shop keeps that info and they have to go back and pay a few cents everytime they want to download music or an app. I am sure the younger ones are more tech savvy, but $120 for even a cheap smart phone is a strain if that's a whole months pay, or maybe even more.John Bingham wrote: ↑Wed Jan 24, 2018 9:02 pmSmartphones are cheap these days, way cheaper than a rudimentary Nokia or Motorola was 10 years ago. Give it a crack on a route you usually get with your regulars and see how it fares (pun intended).John Bingham wrote: ↑Wed Jan 24, 2018 9:02 pm I've had enough of bullshit arguments with drivers so I generally only get guys I know.
