How Safe Is Phnom Penh Before Election Day?

Post by Mekong.sushi.fighter »

Hello, I was wondering if it's safe to go out at night when it's nearing election day, because my family in Cambodia are telling me that every time it's nearing election day there is a rise in crime. They told me that more thieves are roaming around and that more robberies are committed in the city. I'm planning to visit sometime during the summer and just wanted to make sure if it's true or not

It's possible that there is more crime near an election, but I wouldn't say it's anything to worry about. Come and have a good time.

Should be totally fine. Even if there is some unrest at least you will have stories to tell back at home how you were visiting a city where they were shooting civilians during democratic election in the freedom park

nothing will happen. security will increase, there is no real opposition to the gov from what i can see.
the Khmers i know all support the current regime
they are all working poor
only the city dwellers oppose

They have good reasons for saying this, that's what they remember. There was a fair bit of violence around the first elections in 1993 and a lot in 1998 too. By violence I mean death squads/assassinations/ plunder etc from all parties. I was here for the 2008 and 2013 elections. Not much happened in the 2008 one, things got a bit more messy after the 2013 ones. I don't see much happening at these elections, the security has been beefed up like crazy since the last election, and the security forces are much better equipped than before. Besides that, the main opposition party has been dismantled, and the turnout for voting registration was dismal, something like 30% of previous elections. So everyone knows who will win, and that there's no point in even bothering to vote anymore. 8-)

July 29th, right?

May rain a bit.

Expect trouble, hope for none, I say.

Not if there's a fire, not even if you hear the sound of a thud from my home and one week later there's a smell coming from there that can only be a decaying human body and you have to hold a hanky to your face because the stench is so thick that you think you're going to faint.

Even then, don't come knocking...Not for ANY reason.

The main issue you might face is that alcohol sales are banned for a day or two. This doesn't mean that you can't get alcohol, it just gets a bit more discreet.

The general security situation definitely drops around elections. Police are taken off regular beats to man posts in unknown places etc. I'm not sure how deliberate this is, before the 2013 elections there was a general announcement stating that traffic police would be too busy with election business to monitor traffic or issue fines for the time being. The traffic situation had been improving for a while and then all hell broke loose again.

dont have any reason to be here or thai or laos so will play it by ear but possibly be absent around the date. possibly thai after songkran for 2 months then laos with a visa extensions till it passes. hmm have to check for possible thai elections too. things do definitely get a bit hairier than normal. people die out of season. but it not usually barang or farang that are dying. come to think of it, there are things i could be doing on another continent
July 29th, right?.
