How much would it cost?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

you wont get fuck all for $10,000 unless its a shoe box and totally khmer style kitchen/toilet,windows, doors and cheap tiles on the walls and floors

We just today went looking at home pro here at stuff and its not cheap to do something nice, a Nice kitchen (semi western style ) will set ya back at least $3,000

problem they are facing building in Kep is they cant find any workers ;-(
as we are moving down next year and will build on our land there will be doing lots of research.
Plans call for buying everything in Home Pro in Trat and then going an picking it up.
Check out the new http://globalhousecambodia.com a huge megastore in PP with apparently good prices and a huge range

It is also an option to build using AAC blocks

http://www.ecogreenproducts.in/aac-blocks.php

I used them to do a 190m2 house both interior and exterior walls - all installed and skim coated in 5 days. They are more expensive to buy but at 20x20x60 you save heaps in time and cement which is getting expensive.

However the best benefit is the insulation - my sunniest wall the heat never gets more than 20% penetration so the house is very cool and I dont need aircon

Those bricks are made in India won't be available here.
Without air conditioning or cool temperatures at night, which we don't have here, there will be no coolness only shade.

Au contraire - I had 4 semi-loads delivered from PP. Approx $1.80 each for the 20x20x60 and $0.79 each for the 10x10x60. Seems expensive but each block is about 10 bricks but if you were doing double brick then it equates to 20 bricks. Significantly quicker in construction ( esp if you have 20cm pillars ) and less cement and render is required as the blocks are much straighter than bricks. Also they are insect proofed, great water resistance, fire resistant and great acoustics when playing guitars.

Here it drops about 10c over night and been close to the mountains I get maybe a degree lower than town. The efficiency of the construction means the hot air doesnt get into a room. Everyone who walks into my house remark how cool it is and thats with a 200m2 flat concrete roof. They are really good.

This has been a really interesting thread. I am almost tempted to build again. Would fancy doing a place on stilts with solar panels, passive cooling etc.

I wonder whether rammed earth with an outer protective skin/barrier would work in the tropics as well as it does in dry heat environments for passive cooling. Or, same concept, burrows like Hobbit houses.
