How much is it costing you to live? (Again)

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. How much is it costing you to live? (Again)

Post by Kung-fu Hillbilly »

I think the cost of living question/poll offers valuable information for many people and deserves to be asked on a regular/yearly basis. And yes, everyone's circumstances are different whether they be married with children living a simple life gone native, or Hollywooding it as a single guy/gal on the town every night. The question does generate some interesting insights into how others are living in the KOW on occasion, so please excuse me if the cost of living question is asked yet again.

One aspect of the cost of living I'm interested in is if people are noticing much, if any, of an increase in their monthly costs compared to the last year or so - and what might lay behind those increases.

You don't specify including or not including rent. So it'll be skewed by people who don't pay rent.

I didn't specify if you payed for hookers every day either.

Your total costs per month are your total costs, and as I mentioned in the initial post, everyone has a different choice of lifestyle - a decision to buy, rent or live on the street. I apologize for any confusion or inconvenience.

I’ve just estimated that my total costs including all the usual stuff like food and electricity and including various school fees are about $1,850 a month.

It’s a bit too simplistic to answer without more context. In PP i may spend just 4-5K per month but my place in HK continues to run 7K per month while I’m away and there are running costs of other things as well (cars, gf...)

not even talking about business overheads, which sometimes blend into personal living costs as well (entertainment, travels...)

You've been on a polling roll lately, haha. My costs have gone up for sure, partly due to inflation but also partly due to changes in habits. Trying to keep things down a bit though.

It all depends on lifestyle. Therefore, I think the poll is too simple. I live in my own house, no loans, etc. But with monthly visits to PP (hotel expenses), expat health insurance (incl. Khmer wife), Western food most of the time, etc. I spend about the same as in the U. S. or Europe. But things have become more expensive for sure. But for those reading this poll as a guideline I think one live comfortably on $1500 incl. rent.
