How much anonymity..?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

The moral responsibility of a mailman is to make sure that the mail gets delivered. They don't open your mail to map your social relations, sexual behavior, medical records or political opinions. They don't open your mail to make sure that you are complying with the law. It is not the mailman's responsibility.

When discussing anonymity it is often brought up in a bad light such as your mask wearing bar guest analogy. Anonymity is a wonderful thing that allows people to keep private information private. Anonymity allows people to Google their medical symptoms, to ask for legal advice publicly and to contact lawyers and journalists.

Anonymity is, in fact, one of the core foundations of democracy. This forum is not a democracy, I hear you say. No, but anonymity enables us to ventilate as we wish without the fear of repercussions. If we didn't have that then it wouldn't be a very exciting place. Anonymity enables us to say "fuck Hitler", even though Hitler has made it illegal to say so.

Yes, some forums have banned anonymous VPN provider ranges and certain email providers. On the other hand, many others have not. Take 4chan as an example, notoriously known for a wide range of nutfuckery. On 4chan, users are anonymous by default. Sure, crime and spam happens, and the moderation team deals with it accordingly. Despite the very strong anonymity on 4chan, for example there are no signups, no email addresses, and VPN providers are allowed to visit and post, the board continues to exist and has successfully helped authorities catching people in the past.

Even the smallest light shines through the darkest places. Sometimes moral conflicts with the law.

No. I was always opposed to the transition from BackStabbers Inc to StroppyChops.com RedHeadedStepChild.com was my preferred choice.
