How to make ALL Cambodians Rich (er)
Re: How to make ALL Cambodians Rich (er)
Thanks FLB,
Yes, that sounds like saving Cambodia. Were they thanked ?
Cambodia was saved again. JBT would know about this. At the
time that the King Father appointed the Prime Minister, I think that
things were not in good shape. There was a lot that needed doing,
but there was no money to cover the expense of the needed doings.

JBT, are you there ? I am the guy who gave you the $50 to buy some
of the boardies a drink. I thought that they may act with civility. None did.
On their behalf, or if you just pocketed the money, would you reply about
the general conditions of the country around the time that the Prime Minister
was appointed ?

Re: How to make ALL Cambodians Rich (er)
It's impossible to make all Cambodians richer. The same goes for any group in the world.
If the whole monetary wealth of the world was to be radically redistributed amongst everyone, within a couple of years the majority of it will be back in the hands of a few. People who are given money normally spend it. Then they are poor people with a t.v, a karaoke machine, a new motor bike or a second hand car, a repiled and reroofed house and no substantial income just as before. Most businesses started with $5000-$10 000 are subsistence businesses.
The smart ones will get their handout and loan it out at high interest and become rich, the dumb ones will party and gamble it away. The rest will buy a new vehicle and repair the house, or buy another little strip of land so they can grow rice, buy a small mill so they can make some extra cash. They might be marginally better off if they invested in an asset that will give a small return, but comparatively they will still be poor.
I agree that HE is a national hero of sorts. Expats bitch and moan about him, or critique him, but the fact is that he has held the country together in peace for two decades, which has given Cambodia the chance to make a new start. Progress here has been phenomenal.

I hear you on that MM. I got second hand death threats for talkingMoodyMonkey wrote:... but the fact is that he has held the country together in peace for two decades, which has given Cambodia the chance .
good about the government when I was on that other board.
So if they roll out the same old ones again, just chuckle.
And I anticipated your concern on how to make sure that it goes
to everyone in an earlier post.
Now if I could get the feeling that someone understood the premise,Dara wrote: As soon as you mention 15 billion dollars
you might think that government or big business would swoop in and take
it all, leaving none for the poor. I have that covered.
My idea starts like OD's "airplane taking off" analogy in that the premise
does not really work, so don't shoot down the premise, but load your
skeet gun, chamber one in the glock, and raise that ak-47 because you
get to shoot down my idea.
The premise is, suppose that Cambodia had no cell phones.
And no one had thought about bringing them in.
.
then we could get to the idea.

Re: How to make ALL Cambodians Rich (er)
This is exactly right. I think the post made by Mrs Stroppy entitled "Nauru’s downfall from rich nation to poverty" on this thread https://cambodiaexpatsonline.com/newswor ... 27-30.html really exemplifies this and demonstrates the effect of giving cash without building the capacity to use it effectively. Short extract below:MoodyMonkey wrote:It's impossible to make all Cambodians richer. The same goes for any group in the world.

Nauru’s downfall from rich nation to poverty
By 1980 Nauru had become the wealthiest nation on the planet, per capita. A monumental achievement for such a tiny, remote island.
Rolling in riches, the locals abandoned their traditional lifestyles and turned to unhealthy food, alcohol and cigarettes. It wasn’t long before a health crisis hit, and hard. Life expectancy plunged to just 50, while rates of diabetes, heart disease and other chronic illnesses skyrocketed along with their waistlines.
Many residents had quit their jobs and went on huge spending sprees including expensive holiday and shopping trips, and importing sports cars - even a Lamborghini. So there was little cash left.
“Hardly anyone thought of investing the money. Dollar notes were even used as toilet paper,” a local told the BBC. “It was like every day was party day.”
In the years that followed, the island went virtually bankrupt. The government, who had made a series of bad investment choices, froze wages and started borrowing heavily from trusts.

Thanks for bouncing the thread.
If you could read the thread just thinking about the premise part
we might make some progress.
I said that there is something as valuable to Cambodian people as
cell phones. But they do not have this "something" here.
And learn that if you ever talk to a rich person and ask about how
much money a rich person has, you may hear that wealth is not
about cash. It is about assets.

No offence meant but I think if you outline your plan in a cogent manner rather than making cryptic remarks progress might be made.Dara wrote:Thanks for bouncing the thread.
