why compare people from 2 countries?
I don't understand how it can be done.
It all depends on your experiences in both.
I don't even try to compare 2 people from the same country.
I have some great memories of Thailand...But, I am not going to compare them to my life in Cambodia.
Apples and oranges...
I can compare the movie theaters. Thailand had superb theaters even on Koh Samui... Cambodia has a ways to go to catch up...

as has been mentioned i think a lot of its down to the crowds you knock about with
95% of Thais i knock about with are from isaan, and theres really not that much difference between them and Khmers at all, they both are often selfless/generous and friendly
i find my experience with the locals always seems to differ from a lot i read and hear when people are complaining,
but i dont really roll with hi-so crowds though, but they can all be cuntish no matter what country you are in,
even in the UK, you hang around with the blue collar working crowd and you can often see similar selfless/generous traits, then you have the snobbish upper/middle/wanna-b-middle class scum who wouldnt throw their bottle of water on ya if you was on fire,
i find its usually the people that have the least are often the most generous/selfless

agree; ur time with locals is on their level and ur situation is unique. For many here they dont really spend time with the locals and only really go to tourist areas. They just mouth others opinions, ( an of course opposite anything i say) having never really spend time in Thailand or with Thai's

BUT it not just the ones that have the least that are the best, its all how you meet them and what ur relationship is with them...
Pattaya, although a tourist area, is also a small thai city and i find the thais there very nice an down to earth, as do many friends of mine that live there

in Thailand ive lived in Hua Hin and Pattaya and never or rarely come across any problems at all,
in Pattaya i stay out of town, my first apartment was right up opposite the big fish market in Naklua, there is actually a lot of Khmers living and working around there,
and now i stay in a little thai neighbourhood opposite market photisan in Naklua,

i find the Thais/Khmers in the coastal towns/cities are generally a lot more chilled, friendly and care free than those that live in the cities

the BS & costs you need to go thru to get married and the many clothes you need change into

BUT Burmese,Thais and laostions have been fucked over as well..

a few general observations/opinions here I add obviously not hard facts.... I believe Cambodians are more humble than thais by a long ways. Smiles more genuine less ego... Cambos also show at least some curiosity toward the outside world (compared to thais anyways) Thais believe they are a superior being/place... Cambodians more open to foreigners. As a culture Cambodians have more energy, more social, more alive... Thais appear to me a listless and numb bunch in their interactions even with each other. Watching the way they interact with each other compared to Cambodians big difference.... Again Egos of Thai people are big in many many ways. Almost as if they haven't ever been humbled... They seem to have the world figured out but don't know anything...... Thais do have nice infrastructure so the power stays on. Nicer places to walk in the city. Better version of pizza

Not disagreeing, as its ur opinion BUT what are you basing your opinions on? Have you spent time with locals in both countries? Alot of what you write about Thai's are stereotypes by people that have not really spent time with Thai's .
I have spent time with locals in villages and cities in Thailand and Cambodia.
Both are open, both are interested in the outside world, both are enjoyable company ( although Khmers do seem to push the Lao khao more on ya)

But for me i enjoy my time more with educated locals, (more so if they were educated abroad) than rice farmers as we just dont have much in common.

I know wealthy, educated and Illiterates from both countries.

I understand your point, different areas different folks. Similar to New York city versus small Midwestern town quite a difference... Stayed several months in chiang mai all/mostly Thai condo building. Not a dump but not luxury... 2 different times... Thai office worker girlfriend first time and once single ( meaning my perspective)... And I wasn't partying nightlife as far as Thai observations and opinions ... .... Chiangmai a tourist trapish I get that.. ... .. Stayed in bangkapi Bangkok airbnb with Cambodia girlfriend ... I will say the family's selling food by the water and staff at condo in bangkapi area was best thailand/friendly experience... Much enjoyed the miles long path and awesome scenery by the water, Lotta bridges next to the mall no transpo needed perfect daily walking. And despite my negativity toward the culture in general the bangkapi area I'd return no problem for a few months holiday. .... It's the beneath the surface/undertone/vibe/ that I don't like in Thailand (in general) borderline rude with the infamous "Thai smiles" that disappear the moment they aren't needed anymore. I suspect if we lived longterm in Thailand (like yourself) we would eventually surround ourselves in a positive social network and keep it at that with little exposure as an "outsider" so to speak. But I'm thankful I don't have to get along/survive/grow/infiltrate myself in Thai culture/country longterm (example running business or education) cuz it wouldn't be for me.... Side note but Hospitality friendly wise I gotta say Philippines wins all of Asia by a landslide! Socially happy bunch at another level Fer sure hard to believe until your around it.. ..Nice people If you can keep from getting murdered by girlfriendbreakup/natural disaster/wrong place wrongtime/ or pissing your neighbor off. Overpriced lodging. Food sucks... But a wonderful happy bunch and a great country to experience at least once for sure
