This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. How to keep your bathroom clean without killing yourself

Post by Francis »

How to keep your kitchen, bathroom and toilet clean without killing yourself

Undoubtedly Cambodia is a very hot and humid country and therefore a perfect breeding ground for all kind of viruses, bacteria (some of them double every 12 minutes) and fungi. Fungi you’ll find especially in your bathroom on tiles and are a severe threat to your health because the spores are quite carcinogenic . Fungi are also absolutely heat resistant.

Because for the reasons above Cambodian supermarkets offer a wide range of chemicals (actually they offer more chemicals than food  ). All bacteria, viruses and fungi are easily killed off with chloride (bleach, e.g. “Haiter Bleach”).

BUT !!!!! one little problem: Many people not only use bleach , but also other chemicals like “Bathroom Duck”. Please be aware if you accidentally combine bleach with “Bathroom Duck” you inevitably produce chlorine gas. Yes !!!!!....that’s this chemical warfare agent used in World War I.

It can happen quickly: let’s say you treat your bathroom tiles with chloride in order to get rid of fungi and then you use Bathroom Duck to disinfect the floor tiles of your bathroom. Now, when you wash off the chloride from the wall tiles it will mix with the Bathroom Duck on the floor and BINGO.
If that happens instantly your eyes begin to burn, your throat and lungs will clog. Open immediately all doors and windows and remove all pets. Leave the room – if you wait too long, chlorine gas will damage your lungs beyond repair and if you wait a bit longer you are DEAD !!!!

Und der Haifisch der hat Tränen
Und die laufen vom Gesicht
Doch der Haifisch lebt im Wasser
So die Tränen sieht man nicht

In der Tiefe ist es einsam
Und so manche Träne fliesst
Und so kommt es dass das Wasser
In den Meeren salzig ist

I have been there and done that. You would never mix bleach and ammonia in back home.........but it is easy to do if you are not aware of what is in the cleaner. If it happens, you will know right away that you have produced chlorine gas. Time to leave immediately and then take steps to clean/air the place out.

as far as I know, Bathroom Duck is sulphuric or hydrochloric ACID, old Thai gf did not listen and used it bare handed. Pustules all over, went to doctor, guess what he told her? same thing I had been saying for a week...wear RUBBER GLOVES. As an aside I've seen this stuff used casually and overdone and it can ruin tiles. Seems to drive the dirt INTO the tile under the glazing.
Bleach is all you need for disinfecting. It's cheap and simple. Soap and/or bleach.

I thought this thread was gonna be about not letting bargirls near you in the bathroom as in recent year or so it seems guys die "slipping on wet tile in bathroom" if they cannot find a guy with a balcony :P

Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.
