Hooray! More American fast food coming to Cambodia!

Post by Rutiger »

Although, of all the American hamburger chains, Carl's Jr. is by far my favorite. I can't imagine how they could possibly keep the quaility they have in the US with just one shop in Cambodia. Most likely, they won't.

Can anyone here compare a Burger King whopper in PP to one in the US or Austrailia? How is Burger King's quality coming along after a few years in Cambodia under their belt? I understand they got off to a predictable rough start.
Carl’s Jr out to satisfy capital’s burger craving
Wed, 23 March 2016
Ayanna Runcie
American fast-food restaurant Carl’s Jr will open its first outlet in Cambodia by the end of June, introducing its innovative burgers and the drive-thru concept to the capital’s increasingly crowded but receptive fast-food market.

Cambodian food and beverage firm TH F&B has acquired the master franchise for the California-based chain, and has selected a location in Phnom Penh’s upscale Boeung Keng Kang 1 neighbourhood for the first outlet, Somach Sovary, head of operations for Carl’s Jr Cambodia, said yesterday.

The company will park its first outlet rather cheekily opposite a branch of its traditional rival, Burger King.

However, Sovary – a former Burger King Cambodia executive – said it was not direct competition that prompted the location choice, but rather a desire to be in the heart of the neighbourhood’s embryonic fast-food strip.

“We have a different concept; our own products, our own chefs and premium burgers that are very different from others,” she said. “It’s very different from local Burger King or KFC restaurants, and these other brands don’t have the drive-through concept here.”

Burger King, which arrived in Cambodia in 2013 and has expanded rapidly, similarly insists that it does not perceive Carl’s Jr as a direct competitor.

“We’re not worried about their opening because they’re not a competitor,” said Thon Sereiodom, assistant to the chairman of Burger King Cambodia, adding that Burger King offers a “world-class standard burger”.

I find it impossible to tell the difference between Burger King and Carl's Jr. here in Thailand and the same was true in Vietnam. I have a ton of friends who tell me how good Carl's Jr. is elsewhere in the world but here in S E Asia - it's just BK with a different logo to all intents and purposes.

Though nothing beats the experience of my recent week in PP where Burger King (Riverside) had sold out of burgers for four consecutive days at a lunchtime. KFC (Riverside) also sold out of chicken at a lunch time. And the pizza shop, which shall remain nameless, via a delivery service called to say they had sold out of pizza... a hat-trick of businesses that are so incompetent they can't even stock the product in their name to a sufficient level.

Wendy's are in Malaysia. There's one in Times Square, Kuala Lumpur and probably others.

Really? I'd say KL was my favourite place in Asia. Even spent my honeymoon (the second one where I actually went with the wife) in KL. It has an incredible array of things to do, great shopping, awesome bars (much, much better than Thailand - though beer prices are a touch eye-watering), superb food, and a population to whom speaking English is not an alien concept. Not sure what else you could ask for from a place really? (Apart from wanting it to be a little cooler).

I did my last ever visa run to KL in January since Air Asia fly from Utapao now, so convenient and cheap. Just a long weekend but enjoyed it nonetheless, great rail transport system when you get the hang of it, good food as I like Indian and a good ethnic mix. I think from memory I got 3 months visa on entry for free and if the shit ever seriously hit the fan in Thailand for me KL would be the obvious choice for a holding place.

Fast food wise Wendy's was always my favourite in the UK when they were there, as there is a Carl Jnr's in Central, Pattaya, I might have to give it a try when I get a periodic fast food craving.
