Honesty in a Hostess Bar

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. Went into a 136 bar last night and was surprised to see a girl working there that used to work in another bar (B) in a different street. Last time I saw her she was at bar B with her boyfriend who had previously pulled her from the bar. He's now back in Australia for a few months and sending her $500-$600 a month. She told me that isn't enough money for her family so she started working again 5 days ago.

Don't be this guy.

These are so many of these guys that it's not even fucking funny!

And no matter what you tell these goobers they will never believe it's possible.

if they don't sweat and ache for the money it's easy to just think it SHOULD come to them. FUCKWITS like those guys are LEGEND there. Imagine some dumb fucking twit saying 600 ain't enough for a month. My GOD. A few years on from Pol Pot and living on bugs and leaves and we get THIS. I can only HOPE that a few send that kind of money to a temple full of monks who MIGHT do something good with it.

I have a GREAT DEAL more respect for those that quietly suffer their poverty without asking Santa for handouts. They're out there.

I don't, it may be the national sport of Cambodia to cheat foreigners but it is not something I respect.

I know one girl who had a Scandinavian boyfriend a few years back. He put her up in an apartment, paid for her to get her teeth fixed and set her up with a stall in one of the markets and would come to see her every few months as his work permitted and leave her with money.

She did a bit of freelancing on the side and then on the guy's last visit to see her about 2 hours after he left she was heading off to Sihanoukville with a Swiss guy for a dirty weekend which she got paid $300 for. Thanks for all the support over the years. Shortly after he stopped coming to see her, I suspect he had her under observation.

Not long after she was back in the bar and snagged an Asian boyfriend who she has been living with ever since. That is not going at all well and she has two other guys now competing for her attention one from Europe and one from the Antipodes.

The problem is that the girls learn these behaviours and pass them on to their friends and that then normalises their shitty behaviour. Dumb guys, okay that's too harsh, 'well meaning' guys come along and want to help them. They want to get them out of the bar and give them some sort of respectability and an alternate pathway. Unfortunately, the cold, motherless reality is that a lot of these girls will carry on banging guys for money as soon as their sponsor is out of the country. Once they have had a taste of the crap you can buy with money they are pretty hard to reign in.

I just don't see this as admirable.

Back in the mid-1990s I dropped a pack off the back of my motorcycle. The bag contained thousands of dollars worth of video gear. A family spotted the bag in the road, ran out and grabbed it and waited by the roadside for my return hours later. I was sure I'd lost that gear forever. I handed them a wad of cash, around $100 to $150 dollars. They refused, so I pushed the cash into the hands of their little one and rode off before they could give it back.

I've witnessed countless incidents where Cambodians went above and beyond in order to do the right thing.

Terrifiedanimal,

I had a similar thing happen on a moto but the bag had about 1000 dollars in cash. The bag fell off my bike and I did not notice it. About a half a km down the road this Khmer was waving crazy at me. I stopped and he pointed to my bike. To my horror the bag was gone. He was waving go back. I went back and this 50 something Khmer was standing on the side of the road with my bag. I gave him $100.00. He did not want the money but I insisted. He helped my tie down the bag and I was off.

Sir Q,

In a con which is worse the dupe or the con. The dupe is just stupid and naive. The con on the other hand is a shark.
