Home Cooking

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. O.K.....everybody has psychological issues. I for example have developed an extreme fear of English pies, poached eggs and slimy beans.....actually everything English gives me the creeps.....kind of phobia, you know.

Doch der Haifisch lebt im Wasser
So die Tränen sieht man nicht

In der Tiefe ist es einsam

In den Meeren salzig ist

Just had a Hungarian gulash with steamed rice on butter. Crazily good. Downside: cleaning up takes more time than cooking.

Satay chicken
1/2 cup peanut butter
270 ml can of coconut milk
2 tbsp kecap manis (I make my own - 1/4 cup soy and 1/4 cup palm sugar in a saucepan over low heat , stir until dissolved, simmer 5 mins, allow to cool and thicken, makes 1/4 cup)
1/2 cup chicken stock
8 chicken fillets, cut into big pieces (I use 4 fillets and 2-3 cups of chopped veggies)
1 onion chopped
3 cloves garlic, crushed
1 tsp ground coriander
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp tumeric
1/2 tsp chili powder
I use a slow cooker to cook this as the meat becomes beautiful and tender. I brown the meat, place meat and veggies in the slow cooker. Mix all other ingredients together and poor over meat and veggie mix. Cook for 4 hours on high.
Alternatively, saute onion, garlic and chilli, add spices until aromatic. Brown chicken pieces, add veggies. Mix other ingredients and poor over the top. Simmer on low for 30 mins.

I made similar ones (yeast dough) dipped in baking soda (laugen) and with cheese, e.g. parmesan and what was just available..

Pull Apart/Scrolls

3 cups plain or bread flour
6 tsp baking powder
100g butter or margarine
1 tsp salt
1 cup milk

Place flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl, add butter with fingertips to resemble breadcrumbs. Add milk, roll into dough. Place on a floured bench and lightly knead, roll out until 1cm thick, add topping off your choice and roll into a log. Cut into slices. Place slices in a greased baking dish/cake tin. Cook in a hot oven (210°) for 25-30 mins.
Can also be cooked in a slow cooker for 90 mins with 5 mins under the grill to brown the top.
Toppings can be anything you like:- cheese and chive; pizza toppings; apple and raisins; cheese and Vegemite; cinnamon and sugar; jam; cheese and bacon; chocolate spread.
I usually only do a half batch as there is only 2 of us.
