Help choosing a University subject.

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. Why? A decent proficiency in English is almost a guarantee of work at companies that are going to be working with multi-nationals or in the service industry.

A Khmer with excellent English and zero formal education could still be trained to work front desk at Intercontinental, but a guy with a commerce degree and very poor English would be turned away.

Also lots of teaching jobs available in the future.

No English, goodbye.
A teaching degree or only learning english does not pay especially in Cambodia for a khmer!
$1,1-500 /month ( for an expat so 1/3rd for a local) ) for teaching is not a very good wage
my daughter makes double that and she is only 21 and it will only go up as she gets her degree ( s)

Ridiculous dogmatic statement which is patently untrue. Completing your first degree arms you with the basic theoretical knowledge you need in order to start learning your profession. A medical or nursing degree for example is both theoretical and practical and involves clinical rotations and placements, where you may cover administering medication via injections, setting up IV's and performing suturing, all very much practical skills. At the same time you need to acquire theoretical knowledge for example basic pharmacology, in order to understand what you are doing when administering medications.

A masters in nursing course I taught on years ago included workshops on setting fractures and applying plaster casts, again a very practical skill, but also requiring anatomical knowledge. Again another example of acquiring a practical skill in a university setting. Being in a profession, whatever it maybe, necessitates that you acquire both theoretical and practical knowledge and progressively expand this knowledge throughout your career.

I think it is better to let her choose the subject to study at the university by herself. she will do great at school if she studies what she likes and specially she is the one who know her own strength and weak. Please do not force her to study what you want her to study. It is more harm than good. I experienced this myself. I still regret that i didn't make the decision by myself. I was forced to study the subject that i don't like. As a result, i didn't do well at school.

I assumed that your daughter is mixed and no doubt she already could speak English. However, it would be great if she could manage to study English at the same time. There are so many student who study two different subjects at the same time and one of them is English. Knowing English is really beneficial. It will help her with her study and also enable her to get a good and high paid job in the future.

PS, if i could go back in time, i wouldn't let anyone to force me to study what i don't want.

In the medical field, universities will indeed organize lengthy internships and apprenticeships in hospitals and other medical facilities where the students will indeed be trained to acquire skills and be supervised by staff who possess the skill already. The medical field, however, is an exception. I do not know know of many other academic fields that do things in that way.

Most academic fields do not lead to any particular profession. They do not have internships. Students will simply have no skills at all when they graduate. In the best case, they will have learned a general method. In the worst case, not even.

Smartest advice on this thread by a mile. Doing something you give a shit about is a much better idea than doing something that might make you money.

Most degrees (worldwide) are utterly worthless apart from as the minimum price of entry to pretty much any job. Ignoring law and medicine... most careers remain open no matter what degree you graduate with.

As I said in the K440 thread: engineering degree from a reputable school.

Of course, it depends on her interests, goals and talents, but there will be no lack of work and salary growth for Cambodian engineers.

I actually noticed this since he posted it :), but didn't bother to reply as it seemed like he doesn't really know about Cambodia. If Cambodians make the same amount Americans do, it wouldn't have been called third world country. Our GDP (nominal) per capita is about 1k or something. Such a poor analogy.
