Hello / Anyone for a beer?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. Thanks for the welcome!

Franciscan sock puppet? I guess not (?). Are these common here?

Well General, I have already been shouted at for not understanding English, and punched by a boy. How much worse can it get? ;)

The tuk-tuk thing can drive you crazy. Kinda like Indian tailors in Thailand. Best to just stuff the earpods in & crank up the music. I don't find 172 "seedy" in the least. I don't understand that at all. I go down there for food. There's like 2 girly bars on the street & 1 I always assumed was gay - "Gladiator' isn't. 136 & 104 are kinda seedy, but not like anything in Pattaya or AC. The only place I consider seedy in PP is GSM - it's "seedy" as fuck.

Sounds like you've been having an "interesting" time in PP. That shouting and punching stuff seems really weird - are you having problems understanding local customs ? Displaying anger is unusual here most of the time.
Would be good to hear what you've been up to.

Wacky Jacky, yeah, I did say street 136....

Anchor Moy: Well I most likely have problems understanding local customs...

The punching was a small begging boy, as mentioned, just his way to earn a living. (I guess most people just give the money, as you are rather helpless in that situation. In China, a girl once clung to my female companion's leg and refused to let go if not offered money - also pretty bad, what are you going to do? But the punching was new.)

The shouting, ok, wasn't too bad. I just didn't understand the amount I was supposed to pay twice, and the third time the woman shouted it at me with sudden impatience. I was rather taken aback, as that hasn't happened to me before in Asia (or anywhere).

Well, I haven't been up to much yet, mostly working from my hotel room. I hope I'll have time for more exploration on the weekend.

Compared to China, people here are much more quiet and don't seem to care much about foreigners (which isn't bad), similar to Thailand I would say. People smile at you, but not overly enthusiastic, sometimes almost a little bit disparagingly (probably I am overinterpreting).

In China, more extremes: some people are extremely friendly and eager to talk to foreigners, but a few are also quite rude.

I noticed that there are many nice and very pleasant restaurants around, which are frequented by locals and foreigners alike. I think the food is great and I liked everything so far. The high standard of the eateries struck me. In China, when I first came and China was already several times richer than Cambodia (at least on paper), there were a lot more super-simple places that offered food from garage-style shops or carts. The food around here is inexpensive considering the quality, but I wonder how normal people can afford it. Probably just the area here around Independence Monument is quite wealthy?
