Although the content/premise and storytelling is interesting, the writer lost a bit of my attention (and possible compassion) from the start. Even in 2014, that villa would have been worth [a lot] more than his "no more than $500 000" estimate. Just shows how out of touch he was with real estate here. Either way, at least they preserved the shell. It's probably a first in Cambodia, so at least a step in the right direction.

That's the old T3 prison site, it was torn down around 2000 and nothing solid has ever gone up there since so I'd be surprised.



Just before demolition it looked well creepy.

a year or two ago they closed the car park and cleared the whole place out (including that gym which was quite busy) ready to build but they must have run out of money and it reopened as a car park. now they are clearing out all the covered parking and cutting down the trees so I think they are going to try again. if that new hotel is ever full there will be a lot more tourists in the area and its a prime site

The Hyatt Regency Phnom Penh is slated for a Q1 2021 opening, and it will be the first Hyatt hotel to open in the Cambodian capital.

The hotel will include 247 guestrooms including 43 suites, and the new contemporary-meets-colonial property is situated in the heart of Phnom Penh’s cultural and business district of Daun Penh and within walking distance to the Royal Palace, National Museum and the riverside.

The hotel will feature 1,400 square meters of meeting space as well as recreational facilities including a 24-hour fitness centre, tropical infinity pool, spa and the Regency Club Lounge.

The designs were created by award-winning Singapore-based SCDA Architects, with a mix of Khmer architecture and French colonial influences. Specially-commissioned artworks by contemporary Cambodian artist, FONKi, will also be on display.

According to a press release, the Hyatt Regency Phnom Penh will feature five dining venues including:

FiveFive Rooftop Restaurant & Bar: A stylish indoor/outdoor open-plan dining concept where guests can enjoy panoramic views of the Mekong River, the Royal Palace and the city skyline alongside refreshing cocktails and lively DJ performances.

When they say "slated for Q12021" that must mean Q12021 is best case scenario if there's an effective and safe vaccine developed, distributed globally and international travel can resume in the next 5 months which, IMO, is way too sanguine of a forecast. It would make no sense to open a hotel given current conditions as i'm sure they're business case requires $150+ RevPAR (revenue per available room) to justify the labor expense of operating a hotel and nobody in town is getting even half of that now. The Rosewood (which is likely much nicer) is charging $150 with < 30% occupancy = $50 RevPAR. Cheaper hotels like the White Mansion are charging only $40/night with similar occupancy. Really cheap guesthouses are charging $2-6/night.

Which properties are you referring to? Just curious for few examples

Its always a matter of perspective, when you talk about change and development. I remember when I was first in Saigon in the mid 90's, Dong Khoi street from the cathedral to the Opera House was all lovely old French colonial buildings, and from there to the waterfront was lined with bars and 'cafe om' , very disreputable and often a bit dicey late at night. Last time I was there it was all gone, replaced by high end malls and branded fashion outlets, and I spoke to some younger Vietnamese friends about how it had changed. They were so enthusiastic about the new developments, how it was so clean and modern and fashionable, somewhere they could hang out and be seen. Although I preferred old Saigon, its their city now and they are happy with it. C'est la vie.
