Have you ever seen Cambodian backpackers?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Have you ever seen Cambodian backpackers?

Post by prahkeitouj »

I'm confused when we talk about tourists and backpackers. I've a question if you have ever seen Cambodian backpackers? Where?

When people here post about backpackers, they almost always mean the low-end type of barang tourists that stay in cheap guesthosues and can usually be identified by their youth, their sloppy dress and often unkept appearance. That description does not really apply to all backpackers but that is the stereotype of backpackers that gets mocked on forums like this. I doubt many posters here have ever encountered Cambodian backpackers. I'm not sure the backpacking type of travel has caught on with many Cambodian youth yet. So to answer your question, most backpackers in Cambodia are foreign tourists, but not all foreign tourists are backpackers.

Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

The Little Beauty really gets around. She came to Beijing too.
While she's a Khmer backpacker, she's not a normal Khmer - not a normal anything really. Too bad, we could use more like her.

Actually backpackers are also tourists, people always define tourists as those who travel with lot of money, stay at expensive place and eat expensive food while defining backpackers as cheap traveler, staying and eat at cheap place. Alcoholic and meth-head and mostly young. Many old foreigners always mock at backpackers. By they way, i have been backpacking a few times and it was nice as you could see places with little spending.

Not all of them Frank Lee Bent, for the last two weeks, i have been backpacking in Malaysia and Singapore. I stayed in a backpacker place in Malaysia where smoking is not allowed. Drinking is allowed, but you only can't drink at the breakfast area. No food and drink are allowed in the dorm room. BTW, i met many non-drinking and smoking backpackers and they are all educated.

I think on this board, maybe only Richar is the former backpacking hippie.
