Have you ever been called "Ah" in Khmer?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Great thread everyone. Learnt stuff today.
Thanks for moving it to the cambodian language thread too. It will be easier to find again and go through it a bit more slowly.

Do it mate. I didn't expect that this thread could turn out this great. By the way UT has introduced a great online dictionary. It might be hard for you to search as you have to write the word you want to know in khmer script.

yeah the reason why ive started to create my own dictionary is because all the khmer>english/Engish>khmer dictionaries only work with khmer script, and there isnt a romany english one, so ive made my own personal one which now has between 150-200 words in it that ive learnt, most words i know already in my head but when theres a word i cant quite remember its a quick reference tool to remind me as i keep it all in alphabetical order :)

the help from you guys has been great

The way I have always understood, the use of "Ah" before a name is pejorative, unless it's just said in a humorous way to young kids ( ex: Ah Swet) or among close friends. The prefix can mean "contemptible", for example when people talk about "Ah Pot."

I don't know how to Romanize that phrase I've heard a thousand times as an insult to bald people, but it sounds like "Ort Ting Ow'" or something.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Haha, ok, since we're talking about bad Khmer words/phrases already.....

I think that's the same phrase I know, which seems to be so offensive that I usually get a laugh, then a serious face, asking, "who teach you that? It no good!"

So I never say that one where others can hear, only when I get going back and forth with someone who is trying to see what bad Khmer words I know.

I would have said it sounds something like:

Cone-mrai-chaka-choi

My fav phrase is: It's your Karma (Kum -robot neer) Samouth can you help with the spelling?
General Mackevili: I just don't want you littering our forum with your drivel.
