Have you ever been called "Ah" in Khmer?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

The two phrases you wrote here are really offensive. I am surprise that your wife loves it.

Fourkinnel wrote:Has anyone been called Om, I think it refers to very old.?

Or Jow-mu-siat (correct me on the pronounciation Samouth) I believe it means useless person.
qinjingyou wrote:Om , uncle who is older than your parents. I've been called that. Also pu, bong, nek, etc. I've been called other things but they weren't true and don't bear repeating.
Actually qinjingyou got it really right. Om and Pu are the same in English means uncle. However in our language, you call someone om when he or she is older than your parents and po when they are younger than your parent.

Note: Om is neither uncle nor aunt. It is just a title you address someone who is older than your parent. In order to street with sex we have to add more words.

Om Srey: Older aunt.

Om Pros: Older uncle.

Po: Younger uncle

Meang: Younger aunt.

You are right. Jom Ma Siat means useless person. It is someone who can not do anything at all. You should learn about kicking the air.

I suggest you to check my other thread calls, Khmer Lessons Related Questions.

Hey little salary. Do you have any ideas?
Hmmm... I can't find it.
The first one means "bald" and the second is ឯង.[/quote]

What you wrote doesn't really sond like Bald in our language.

I would write, Tro Ngoul .

Yes Mop or Map means fat. It makes sense that she calls him Ah Mop. It is really normal if woman calls each other Ah then name.

Haha, I don't think I've ever been called "Ah Mackevili" but I've definitely been called "Ah Mop."

Is that the same "Ah" meaning in both?
Both are insulting words. They must thought that you are really fat.

I was sitting in a bar then I heard a Khmer girl called an old barang man Ah. I didn't tell him what it is as I don't want him to feel upset. Then I thought about CEO members there must be some people who have been once or twice called Ah with their name.
I would call her 'ME' back. Me chhke...lol
You know what according to our culture, when the woman calls man Ah it is not really serious. However if we are men calling them Me, it is really serious. We respect woman more than man. If you ever learn khmer language, you would hear a lot of words staring with Mea mean female. It has something to deal with our history back in the first century. At that time, our king was female. She was the first king of Cambodia.
according to my culture she is no lady is she is using the word Ah to address me. I am responding to what you posted . May be you should of made it clear that if a woman calls you a motherfucker to thank her for it. Dont talk crap. I have never heard my Mother or wife use the word motherfucker in any language .

Girls who use the word AH are ......?

Hahaha, i wouldn't thank to her for this. i would just walk away. The main reason that i made this thread is to just help people to understand. I wouldn't suggest them to use them.

You have to be able to have a laugh and a joke with the person you are gonna spend most of your time with, otherwise whats the point. Couldn't spend my life with someone who is going to take it all too seriously. Obviously i don't use these terms of endearment in public, that would just be wrong ;)
