Has Sihanoukville got better, or worse?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. Has Sihanoukville got better, or worse?

Post by shnoukieBRO »

Changes have happened in the last 5-8 years.... A brand new central market, a new paved road for Victory Hill.... Serendipity beach has been completely made over, and there's more...

BUT, what many might consider most important is, 'has this improved Snooky, or not'?

Some might prefer the old market, the older more carefree vibes, the older run down Serendipidy, others not... To those who can be bothered, maybe you could add your expert comments to the debate. Rather than keep this a pub only topic, let's get those snooky opinions/photos/videos, here!

you've spelt Shitsville wrong :stir:

this is only my 4th season here, but from what i know from the more long termers is that it was better back in the day, while its becoming better for tourists/tourism, it makes it lose its "unique" sparkle that it once had, tbh the place has changed a fair bit over the past 4 years, the new roads around victory is great though for sure haha

Yes Jamie. I was there before the recent changes. Even then, i met Rodney (RIP),who was telling me of how much better it was (before back then)! It seems that Cambodia's quirkiness is what makes it unique, plus the old expats. Modify that, and the problem of blandness can manifest.

To those who want to turn Snookie into another Thailand beach resort, shame on you..Mind you i still believe that Shitsville has far too much work ahead to be completely ruined!...On the other hand, new Hotels bring forth more options and competition so better rooms can probably be had for less, etc etc. :beer3:

It will never ever be anything like any beach areas in Thailand

Better or worse than what? I guess it depends on what you're looking for.

It's better, in that the backpacking, hippy crowd now either go to the islands, which have developed more and more in recent years, or they follow Serendity Rd down to the pier then turn left. The next 100 to 200 meters of the beach is theirs. Then there's a bit of a backpacker overflow down at Otres.

Some expat Sihanoukvillians belief that this is good because 'most' tourists just take the bus to Serendipity and just stay there. This is incorrect, as 'most' tourists to SHV are actually Chinese and wouldn't know where Serendipity is, unless it's the name of a room in one of the casinos.

Sihanoukville is developing, slowly, and will continue to do so.

Does anyone remember Koh Samui before it had an airport?
Does anyone remember Koh Chang before the road was sealed and bungalows weren't made of bricks and mortar?

Sihanoukville already has an airport, sealed roads, and a plethora of accomodation.

It's just a matter of time before it's completely ruined, whatever that might mean, but I think we still have a few years yet before we need to worry too much.

The Snookie flights are from within Asia, and not really linked into international Airlines, so it'll remain low key for some time i suppose. I guess change brings convenience and competition, at the price of losing the 'good ole days'.... :hattip:

I liked it better before there was a Serendipity Beach. But things change.

In 26 months I have never ventured down too Sihanoukville, made it as far as Kampot and Bakor mountain.

I usually just fly to Thailand for a nice beach.

Can you surf there?
