Yup, in fact we have America to thank for the 8-hour day, 40-hour week.
not the country, the trade unions
Indeed, I wonder how many fervent capitalists in observing countries will go to work to defend their position, LOL

The first country to adopt eight-hour working day was Uruguay. The eight-hour day was introduced on November 17, 1915, in the government of José Batlle y Ordóñez.

...

Emigrants to the new settlement of Dunedin, Otago, while onboard ship decided on a reduction of working hours. When the resident agent of the New Zealand Company, Captain Cargill, attempted to enforce a ten-hour day in January 1849 in Dunedin, he was unable to overcome the resistance of trades people under the leadership of house painter and plumber, Samuel Shaw. Building trades in Auckland achieved the eight-hour day on 1 September 1857 after agitation led by Chartist painter, William Griffin. For many years the eight-hour day was confined to craft tradesmen and unionised workers. Labour Day, which commemorates the introduction of the eight-hour day, became a national public holiday in 1899.
This is why Wikipedia is not a great source for information.

May Day, Cambodia style.

Ministry issues warning about Labour Day event
1 May 2018
The Labour Ministry yesterday said all union groups cleared for public Labour Day celebrations must obey the law, adding that there will be no marches to the National Assembly today.

Mr Samheng said he expected Labour Day to be full of celebrations and entertainment, without any marches.

“I want everyone to take this day as a day of entertainment for our workers,” he said. “This day is meant to create solidarity in the labour sectors because we are committed to developing mechanisms to solve problems.”

“So, we don’t need to march in the streets any more.” Mr Samheng added. “I don’t want to see any more workers marching along the streets, but we’re not banning the celebrations.”

Phnom Penh Governor Khoung Sreng on Friday sent a letter to Interior Minister Sar Kheng to inform him about the request made by CLC for about 2,000 people to march to the National Assembly.

Mr Kheng signed and returned the request with one clause: union groups may gather, but without marching.
CLC president Ath Thorn eventually agreed to the decision made by City Hall and the Labour Ministry for the event to be confined to a park.

As an Australian ex-union boss for two unions (the PSU and the SSTUWA) over 20 years, ICBS on that one. America may have negotiated those conditions in America, but Australian unions negotiated them in Australia, etc. Quite surprised to see your assertion, to be honest.
Momentary lapse of reason too many open tabs at same time.

More May Day, Cambodia:

Labour advocates hold May Day rally in Phnom Penh
1 May 2018
The Cambodian Labour Confederation held a May Day rally near Phnom Penh’s Wat Phnom on Tuesday morning, with nearly 1,000 workers joining to demand a higher minimum wage of $207 and expressing disappointment at the impact of the Kingdom’s controversial Trade Union Law.

Authorities were out in full force to meet the demonstrators, with more than 100 police officers and Daun Penh security guards present at the CLC rally.

The labour federation had initially asked to march from near the Council for the Development of Cambodia by Wat Phnom to the National Assembly, but Phnom Penh City Hall denied them permission, only allowing for a rally along the riverside.

Workers braved the intense heat as confederation President Ath Thorn called on the government to ensure that the minimum wage is opened up to all sectors and that it reaches $207 per month. The current wage for the garment sector is $170, and negotiations over a universal minimum wage are ongoing.

He also continued to raise concerns over the 2016 Trade Union Law, which has been criticised for curbing union organisation, recruitment and activities, while also acknowledging that the government has been more attentive to workers’ concerns this last year.
