Grumpy Cnts

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

2020 has been one of the most fulfilling years of my adult life.

Hope this helps.

Are others feeling the same.
No, I feel very lucky to be in Cambodia at the moment.

Apart from the lack of travelling this year I haven’t been affected at all, maybe I’m fortunate.

Not sure how many of the people posting here are in Cambodia and I guess dependant on the job you are in, but I’d say we’ve dodged a bullet...so far

This;^^^^^
Phuket is beautiful, except for Patong, Karon, Kata, ( places i never visit anyway) its been lovely here,
No traffic, no assholes, no lines. Most places i visit are still open, beach is lovely ( although now that the winds have shifted, no waves) no shortages of anything.

I had planned on moving to Cambodia last june and taking a trip to Burma this month but.,....
There's always next year :-)

A very dodgy start: getting my travel plans scuppered, having to run back to London for 3 months and the stress and agro of getting back here. After that it's been all plain sailing.

On the downside, Phnom Penh is lacking it's usual vibrancy and they regular ebb and flow of mates arriving is sorely missed. People have left since my return and now want to come back but can't. Many bar's are in big trouble, more will close and I think it will get worse before it gets better.

However, on the upside, there's plenty of places open, gyms will open up again soon, the weather is lovely, road are quieter and you can always get a seat at the bar.

But I am far happier here than I would be anywhere I know. I'm hunkering down and waiting out this Covid-19 business and given our freedoms, easy way of life, good places to wine and dine and amusements aplenty, here is about as good as it gets for the time being.

Around July next year I will travel again and until then, as far as I am concerned, I'm in clover...

(I am still a grumpy bastard mind you, but a contented one)

I do not thing I have become (more) grumpy, at least not more than my usual self. Yes, it has been a hard year: I had to let more than half of my staff go, business prospects are dire at best and, worst of all, I haven't seen my little Princess since December; video calls are no replacement for that.

So yes, it has been a hard time but I realized early on, during the first lock-down, that I could either get all depressed, sit on the couch all day and mope, and drink myself to death. The alternative was to make the best out of it. I have plenty of time to exercise and actually managed to lose a few kilos and I am out bird watching whenever weather permits. Now obviously I am not saying everyone should turn into a twitcher, but I think it is important for both mental and physical health to find some interest and make the most out of it. It has kept me sane and I am sure I can go on for a little while yet. Though obviously the sooner that vaccine hits the ground, the better.

Zero complaints personally whilst recognising the very real hardship others are facing. I've always preferred low tourist season and that's what we currently have an extreme example of. To be honest I think I'll probably find it harder to readjust the other way when the masses return.

For exercise I make sure I get out and walk 10km every other day something I never did before. Swim the other days. I go out for a beer three times a week to my regular bar, and now everyone recognises and acknowledges each other since there's no tourists around. You're always guaranteed someone to have a chat to for sanity purposes, it's the most enjoyable laid back social atmosphere I've had for years and I've met some interesting and friendly new people. Bangkok's only a couple of hours bus ride away for a break and change of scenery.

Can't say I miss regular long-haul travel which was done out of family duty, technology has proved to be an okay compromise on that front.

Will be different having a Christmas in a hot climate.

I miss travel and going home to visit family and friends. I dont miss masses of cheap charlies here , but I feel sorry for the people who live from tourism. Good side is that the girls at the riverside love us more now....
