Google Translate is freaking out Sihanoukville

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Or why not Shenzhen to be more accurate. We are becoming a SEZ after all.

Even I have contributed to Google Translate from English to Khmer. It's with user contributions they improve (although maybe not so much from my contributions).

It wouldn't surprise me if it did in fact translate to Shanghai, and it wouldn't surprise me if it was just a fake Facebook post. My girlfriend tried it a few days ago, and it translated to Sihanoukville.

There were some similar jokes in Google translate in my language a few years ago too, for example a small town with a lot of immigrants was translated to Mogadishu.
Someone just tried it and it came back kampong Som, but that's using the proper name for snooky. I suppose we ought to try typing in Sihanoukville in Cambodian alphabet, but cannot find a Khmer who knows how. they all call it kampong som
yeah its a similar thing to Saigon/Ho Chi Minh, the original name was Kompong Saom and most locals still call it that, then it got renamed to Khaet Preah Sihanuk in honour of King Sihanouk

Personally i always say Kompong Saom and កំពង់សោម when writing it, Sihanoukville is a bit of a mouthful to say correctly, which most foreigners dont

Good to see people writing Saom not Som.The pronunciation should not rhyme with Kompong Thom. I always hate the poms pronouncing Patt a ya as Pa Tire. The Germans always called it that. Its much easier to pronounce properly than Kompong Saom
