I've gone electric

Post by Khmu Nation »

Bought an electric motorbike on Sunday. $550. Its top speed, 45kph, is a little slower than I normally drive at but not too frustrating. In traffic its fine. It does about 60km before requiring a charge up and a full charge from 0% to 100% takes about 8 hours. I will be interested to see how much my electric bill goes up in a month. I'm currently spending about $200 a month on gas - which is too much plus all the queues to get fuel and other engine problem bullshit. This definitely feels like the future of city transport. I quite like driving it, it is silent.

My Google Maps Timeline says I travelled 123 km and walked 25 km last month. Other than a couple of tuk-tuk rides it cost me nothing to use the City Bus Service. That definitely is the future of city transport in PP.

I'm not in PP. Also convenience is important to me and I am willing to pay for it. I'm not standing about waiting for a bus - which doesnt exist where I live. I have things to do. I'm not some retired old falang.

I'm curious, how are you spending $200 a month in fuel on a bike?

Even on my delivery bikes getting used 8-10 hours a day would barely rack up that kind of bill (even when gas was 5000 riel a litre).

But one day you will be, and you will be able to boast about how fast your electric wheelchair can go, so until then stick to the comments made on ,

I'm assuming he's got a car.

What brand is the bike? The Voltra look nice. I visited their showroom at the beginning of COVID and was impressed.

I was thinking that, but then was wondering what the point was about mentioning the fuel bill as if an electric bike was the same thing as a gas car?

I might be overthinking this.

It was fair @SlowJoe - I used an 883 as my daily ride and I'd be pushed to say I spend more than $50 per month riding Toul Kork to the very south end of BKK1 every day; and that's on something made in the USA which are notoriously bad for making efficient engines whether bikes or cars.

That said, I'd happily go electric if anyone would actually make a bike or car that had any style whatsoever. From Tesla that just look like a bang average sedan, to the Cybertruck which looks like something my son would make out of lego when he was 4, through to the Harley Livewire which transformed the brand from cruisers with style to just another crotch-rocket wannabe, bleh, I'm so underwhelmed. Plus it is all nonsense until humans finally embrace nuclear for electricity. #ChangeMyMind

I actually quite like the look of the first Model S, although that being said I'd never touch anything made by Tesla just by build quality alone.

I got into hybrids when they first started hitting the roads in Canada, (I drove a Prius back in 03' before they were cool), but given how unreliable hybrid and EV tech in general is even now, I can't imagine trying to transition to a full on EV any time soon for anyone.

People go on about "There's only one moving part!" in terms of the engine, but EVs blow engines and transmissions all the time just like a gas car and the replacements are just as devastatingly expensive, if not more so as of now...and that's on top of the battery itself which is total game over if it goes...

Just from an economics stand point, EVs and even most hybrids right now seem like a hopeless cause to me, especially now. (Not the tiny scooters by the way, I think those are pretty neat actually).
