Going to work when your sick

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. Going to work when your sick

Post by juansweetpotato »

I was wondering what people think about taking time off when you are sick (flu, stomach infection-diarrhea etc).

What is the general consensus among Khmer on this? What are the exceptions?

In China, I keep noticing that they offer 3 to 5 days paid leave for sickness.

Depends. Hangover is not a valid excuse, contagious illnesses are. I do send staff home when they are obviously sick or the diseases are highly infectious (conjunctivitis for example).

My Khmer staff seem to find any excuse to claim they are sick and need a day off.

Normally at least one a week will call in sick in the morning from anything to headaches, diarrhea or even period cramps (yes, Khmer ladies actually tell you this as why they can't come to work).

Normally they only take 1 day off so it's not much of an issue.

My experience is different, my staff generally came into work sick presuming I'm guessing it would count against them at Khmer holiday time.

We give all staff a set amount of sick days they can take a year. Most people use all of them.

If they need to take anything longer than 3 consecutive days off from work because of illness they must supply a doctors note.

Filipinas too.

I used to go to work even when I felt sick, no more, people don't appreciate it, and often you just end up infecting others.

As per the labour law, employees are entitled to 15 days of paid leave. This includes weekly time off, paid holidays, sick leave, maternity leave, annual leave and notice period and special leave granted up to a maximum of seven days during any event directly affecting the worker’s immediate family. In my experience, most places are a little bit more generous and grant more than 15 days paid leave. This depends on the contract obviously. You can't be sick for 15 days and expect to have 15 extra days of paid holiday.

The Labour Law is progressive.

Unfortunately it gets abused by people who disrespect it.
