Getting A Lot Of 20K Notes Lately ?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. Getting A Lot Of 20K Notes Lately ?

Post by wackyjacky »

I sure am. All my change is in Riel these days. All I can figure is that the $ must have appreciated.

I won't be drunk for about 9 more hours. What's your excuse ? I'm seeing a huge uptick in the amount of Riel I get in change for the last month or so. I don't think it is a coincidence anymore.

4080 at the money changes the other day. Trouble is if you buy in a convenience store, pay for petrol or buy phone credit etc in PP they charge from 4100 -4800 if you pay in riel instead of dollars. So, you lose a lot. Strangely it doesn't happen in SNVL, never used to in PP before either.
Another thing I have noticed is the change from charging 100 R if the amount owed is for eg 51 R and not charging it if it is say 49R. Now if it is even 10R they charge the 100. Over 20 transactions that's only 50c. Times it by 30 and you have 15$ in a month you didn't even owe. That's 1.5 hours of teaching you didn't need to have done.

For Christ's sake, 90 riel is 2.25 cents.

You would only lose $15 a month if you were doing 667 transactions a month where you are "short changed" the maximum 90 riel. You'd have to go to the minimart more than twenty times a day.

I've met several sad sacks here who boast of changing all their dollars into Riel at a money changer in order to benefit from the 4,000 Riel = $1 approximation. It's the funniest thing I've ever heard. Then they sulk for an hour when supermarkets use the 4,100 Riel to $1 exchange rate.

Interstingly , a lot of shop keepers seem to like to take the dollar and give the riel in change. lol
My own argument is why don't they give rather than always want to receive as in the past as per the exchange rate in my above post. OTOH, If a KFC server makes 100 on every transaction per shift, they will make a few bucks extra. I would think they are very poorly paid so i don't mind 100R. It's the absolute fuckers that charge double and more after 5 years of living here that get my wrath and have flavored the whole of Cambodia with a soupcon of shit for me. Same in Vietnam, but to a lesser/ different extent.

Getting absolute wads of new 500s, fewer 100s, but 1000s seem to be in short supply at the moment. Plenty of 10ks and 5ks, but don't remember the last time I saw 20ks.
