Go Fund me - when you die in Cambodia... who pays ?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Go Fund me - when you die in Cambodia... who pays ?

Post by Anchor Moy »

Starting a separate thread to keep the discussion off the threads of deceased Cambodian expats and tourists.
More and more announcements of foreigners dying in Cambodia are followed by a Go Fund Me appeal to get the body home and/or pay for hospital and funeral costs. Am I the only one who thinks that this is a strange trend ? And generally, what did people do before GFM existed ?
What do people who travel with no insurance at all think will happen if they die, or do they not care ? I admit that in my youth - like early 20s - I was travelling around with no insurance, but these days there are many people of all ages that die, or have accidents, or fall sick in Cambodia and don't seem to have given this a thought. Usually, when you live in the west, you make sure that you are insured, so why is insurance less important in a third world country where you probably have no backup ?

Another thing, if you are a tourist(not expat) and you have paid for your plane ticket to Cambodia with a Visa or Mastercard, there is a death insurance included when you use your card (if you have a return ticket or within a certain time limit of course). Do people even know about this ?

Thoughts on GFM, the need (or not) for insurance, how you see dying in Cambodia for expats and foreigners ?

Insurance is often invalidated when one dies from drugs or over-intoxication, or driving without a valid license.

My insurance policy is a mound of highly aged flammable wood protected from the elements with the cremation fee($25)tucked away in a childproof place. The wood will accompany my corpse to the local wat. I don't want the gold gilded Chinese hearse, a mechanical cow and a tarp will be just fine.

Haven't had insurance for decades.
MY gold will pay for the burning and i am home so nowhere to send me but spread the ashes on the sea

Not sure how i feel about someone that dies away from home, sad a bit but thats only cause they died, ( but what if they were old and falling apart .i might be happy for them) but i for one would never contribute to send anyone anywhere if they were dead.

Im all for Go fund me after serious accidents. If you have no medical travel insurance, I'll help your Go Fund Me page to pay for your overdose of propofol. Problem solved.

My previous post was. plan A. Plan B was highly offensive to my Cambodian wife. Simply stated it goes, "Shove a bone up my ass and whistle for the dogs." Too much propriety and too many lies at a conventional funeral for me to honor one.

Call a tuk-tuk for a trip to the crocodile farm.

Or a burial-at-sea in the big Tonle Sap lake,

They can torch me at the pagoda. Or leave me lying where I fall. I'll not really give a shit at that point. Surely you can just put the ashes in a jar and have someone take it with them when they're next going back.
