Fun things to do on a budget?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. Fun things to do on a budget?

Post by IshH92 »

Hey there! I'm relatively new to Cambodia and I'm on a pretty tight budget until my job moves to full time in January. Do y'all have any ideas for some cool stuff to do in Phnom Penh but on a budget? I'm looking to get out more and have some fun!

Take a city bus to the outskirts and walk back in...10 km....get a good tan...go frogging or crabbing in lakes and rivers catch your dinner...plane spotting at the airport ( if your English)...Finally Do Srey Touch my inexpensive prostitute friend who has very reasonable rates....
I was born with nothing , and I still have most of it left.

take a run up to Oudong, after reading a little history- check out the fish farms on the way.
rent a moto and spend the day at koh dach (silk island)
assuming you are in PP.

in sv, head out to HE beach and stop along the fish port on the way for a look at all the fish picling and preserving operations. some cool small boatyards along there. take teh big clams you find on HE beach for dinner that night- it is very clean water there so no worries.

head off to ream and get a longtail from the beach shacks - visit the islands.

these are all slightly off the packaged tourism route.

get a moto and head to the countryside! that is very interesting and cheap.

be very careful with your driving.

kampot is a good place- lots of little garden homestay places across the river in the backpacker zone- $7/night and quite agreeable. moto is abt $3/day iirc. take a run up to Bokor Mountain and down to Kep for a day trip.

What would you do in your home country on a limited budget? Go fishing,.Go out for a COUPLE of beers and meet some new people - ie: say "Gday mate" and see what happens next. Walk around people watching. Jog around people watching.Hire a bike, go for a ride and SEE this wonderful new country you traveled so far to see.Smile at people and say G'DAY, HI, HELLO, SUSADAY, SALAMAT PAGI, whatever. Truly, you don't really even need to think outside the box to find things to do here. People here are quite friendly in real life and will respond to a smile and a "G'day mate'', no matter what impression you get from some of the forums and FB pages. Kudo's to you. You had the balls to come here in the first place, don't let fear of the unknown hold you back now mate!

Dog meat is more expensive than beef I've been told. Also, it tastes like crap.

- Get a $3 tattoo at RSD on Sihanouk blvd
- Drink beer in Golden Sorya Mall
- Steal ciggarettes at the market with your shirt pulled over your head
- Dance in the street naked
- Start a fight with a tuk tuk driver over those 2000 KHR he's cheating you on
- Use Lonely Planet like a bible
- Shout at people everytime you buy something, they are probably overcharging you anyway
- Drink margarita pitchers at Viva La Taco
- Always ask if it is happy hour before you sit down
- Start a study circle with your glue buddies
- Befriend that German a-jai dude
- Steal soap and toothbrushes from hotels
- Eat bugs in front of the palace but don't forget the picture for Facebook
- Kidnap some French kid and demand a ransom or a phone call with the president
- Tell people that you lost your passport and all your money and just need to borrow a little until next life
- Ask your tuk tuk driver to wait for you but then you run away and never go back
- Pick up an HIV positive 5000 KHR prostitute, your government probably covers your costs
- Steal bags from stupid backpackers
- Steal RCAF license plates, you can sell them for a lot of money
- Buy traffic police uniform and demand bribes from people
