I have 3 pre-existing medical conditions I declare, therefore it costs a lot more but I wouldn't dream of travelling without insurance, in case anything happens
It's really not astounding, if you were young, healthy and had little money,
would you rather spend it on girls and partying or health insurance?
Some of you guys are really out of touch, and I imagine you have high incomes coming from the West,
it's always easy to speak from your high horse, but backpackers are not like that.
One time I met a French girl who was sleeping on hostel floors because she didn't have money for a dorm bed.
Backpacker insurance is less than $200 for the year (1 less beer a day). If you can't set aside that out of your budget then you shouldn't be going in the first place
Really? what insurance is that? I'm not a backpacker but when I was paying health insurance it cost at least 30-50 bucks a month,
the only thing cheaper is if you have insurance though your credit cards, but those usually have a 60 day limit.

Then she should not travel, simple. I have always had health insurance, even when I was young and poor. No high horse here, just common sense.
I totally agree with you, but she certainly wouldn't. She was having a great time and traveling for long periods, a very smart girl who went to to university, she just didn't have money. Maybe she had insurance, I don't know, but I bet half of backpackers don't have it, and it is because of money.

It's hardly going to break the bank though, a whole year's worth of travel insurance from World Nomads costs less than US$560.

Its completely irresponsible not to have travel insurance, and to rely on begging for money from complete strangers if you do have a problem

Doesn't matter if you're a backpacker or an old ex-pat, they're all adults at the end of day, and should take responsibility themselves, its what being an adult is about

first one I look at
Image

That is for 365 days of coverage, worldwide excl USA (I assume it goes up with that as you'll probably get shot)

todays rate is $210, I am sure you can find cheaper if you shop around.

It is not great coverage but does the essentials

I seriously doubt this price is 1) true 2) available to non UK citizens and 3) will cover an accident if you're driving a scooter, which is by far the most dangerous thing most of us do.
But I'm going to ask them.
As the poster above said World Nomads is 560 for a year, that's not cheap at all. I just bought a scooter in Cambodia for that money.

How many flights is a backpacker going to get during a year's travel? How much does that cost by comparison?

1) I don't quite understand, I have no reason to lie

2) I am sure there is an equivalent site for any other country, it's very u likely that UK would be cheaper than the rest kg the world

3) probably not as it was the cheapest tariff, but I reckon if you went one up it would be

I'll look into it and let you know what the real cheapest price is that I could get that would cover an accident if
I'm riding a scooter. If you're right I'm going to by it immediately as my credit card insurance just expired.

Do you have a motorcycle licence in your own country? Better check it's covered if you don't.
