I don’t buy into the idea of discounting Khmers. The business owner makes it sound like a promotion to attract Khmer customers but it’s not. It’s how they run their business. White people pay double price because they are white. Call it what it is.

The OP said that the price advertised was $5 per person. His family was discounted for being Khmer. He was being charged the advertised price.
Would he have been happier if the whole family was charged the $5 per head because they were with a westerner? Of course not so why make a bloody song and dance about it.
OP says he has been here a long time and has a Khmer family, well he must see this all the time so why get on your high horse now.

My friend was in hospital and she asked if I could help her with some food. I went to the hospital and was met outside by her sister. I gave her the money and food but she said I could not go into see her sister. She said if they see she has a barang friend (boyfriend/husband in their view) they would charge her more money.

This is KoW. If you live here know the rules and expect to pay more.

The only time I get the shits is when a price is advertised and they try to gouge out more because you are a westerner. This I will not do. =@

$2.50?
Seriously??

You missed an awesome day out with your family over $2.50. Sad.

Not to mention that your family lost face.

If the person spoke down that much the whole family should have boycotted the boat trip and done something else.
The ticket seller, a native Khmer speaker, simply told the foreigner's sister in law, a native Khmer speaker, in the Khmer language, that the foreigner had to pay more. Why is that offensive? Why does he expect all Cambodians to speak to him in English?
Read original post. He directly says the issue was not the price difference nor the price change. It was in fact the manor in which the Khmer said it.

This guys mother tongue is not English so his expression isn't the best for a native English speaker.

"I know that most of the time the price is not the same for foreigner and Cambodian and I don't care about the price difference. The thing is how this guy said that. He was sure that I don't speak Khmer and was surprise to see that I answered him in Khmer. "

The Khmer stated two facts 1) a member of the party was a foreigner 2) the price for said foreigner was 20000. The thin skinned gentleman appears to have perceived some insult in these simple facts. Perhaps his mastery of Khmer and the nuances of Khmer speech are not as highly developed as he claims. :hattip:

Many, many, many. Especially when it comes to teaching. I'm an English teacher, and I work with many Khmer English teachers who earn a fraction of what I do. The only difference between me and them is I'm British and can pronounce words in received pronunciation. But on the other hand, they've spent 3 years studying English at university. I haven't. I'd say that when you balance up the pro's and con's, they are no less qualified than me. But they earn a lot less, simply because they're Khmer and don't pronounce some words correctly.
Really? I'd like to see that statement put to a rigorous test.

i guess i'm desensitized to the foreigner mark up. i'm so used to it. $2.50 is cheap. the rude-ness factor i usually let my ppl handle that, they can be rude in return, sometimes i actually have to hold them back.

In most of Europe it is firmly illegal to charge people more money on the basis of race or nationality. That doesn't mean it doesn't happen, but it is clearly unethical and usually illegal. I generally make a point of avoiding places that have official racist price structures whenever possible. Been here 16 years, wasn't cool with it 16 years ago and still not cool with it now. The fact that even EDC does the same thing is outrageous.

I love this country but will continue to avoid racist business practices whenever I have the option. When Cambodians come to my country they can be assured that they will never be charged more simply for being foreign.
Nothing racist about letting pay tourists more for cultural attractions. In my country musea and many other cultural attractions are free because we live there and pay taxes for it, non residents have to pay. Nothing wrong, racist or illegal about it. Just like khmer can visit angkor wat for free
just noise, white noise
