Fire at Old Market/Psar Chas in Phnom Penh (vids + pics)

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

From what I have been at work is that the few regulation the government does have 1 of them is that if an old structure was burnt down you must build a modern building.

There are a plethora of laws and regulations here. Enforcement is just a little bit hit and miss however.

Means code compliant! We get work! But what's the Cambodian codes? I've never heard of CFPA here.

So much for the theorie that the fire was started in the "middle of the market". It's very close to the street which actually made it easier to put.

The affected area is mostly cleaned up, and they have already started preparations for rebuilding it. Heaps of (new) metal poles laying around and quite the activity over there.

Yesterday there was some kind of meeting at the market with the affected sellers, and they burst into applause several times. I would love to know what was being said there, if anyone knows. Anyway, with the current reconstruction and the applause it seems like it was good news.

Hoping to see the market back to normal in a few weeks
