Fire at Old Market/Psar Chas in Phnom Penh (vids + pics)

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

If what I have observed after other market fires holds true for this one, most vendors will be far more impacted by the down time of their shop being closed by the market fire than by the loss of stock. (Market people's private homes often double as warehouses. Often, the stock lost at the market only represents a portion of their total stock.) The faster they can get that market back up and running, the better for all involved. Be interesting to see if the authorities allow the vendors to set up elsewhere nearby (as they usually do in such cases) to carry on business until the market is rebuilt (assuming it is to be rebuilt.) If things follow the usual pattern, after the controversy of allowing the vendors to set up temporarily elsewhere, will come the controversy of increased rent for stalls at the rebuilt market.

Personally I don't know if the others have their heads up their asses but until the fires put out and an actual investigation put together there isn't any hard evidence.

It's a shanty town of free flowing plastics and combustible fabric/oils then also the dry non-fire treated wood. Imagine those synthetic polymer clothes and shoe material melting.

But again I doubt they will call in an "expert" to conduct or review the investigation. So I don't expect anything credible.

Personally I just want to see cheap plastic fire protection systems put in. Just for life safety. No fatalities reported so that's good.

I was asked to quote a system to bring a warehouse in PP up to international standards and was shot down immediately as too expensive. This was a more modern warehouse with multi row racks and freezers. I have little hope that things will change in many many years.

I agree with the majority of what ThePeck has said. Not sure whether he agrees with me or not but I think we have made similar points.

Yeah, I think the real mystery here is why more markets in Cambodia don't burst into flames. Could be arson I guess, but without some hard evidence, the theory fails Occam's razor. Market fires in Cambodia can be much more simply explained.

One could say that you are the Sock puppet of the peck...If we're gonna throw accusations around.

I'm also glad nobody got hurt.

In a little over two years, the old market will be something bigger and better than Psah Thmey/Sorya Mall.
There was no sarcasm or malice intended during the making of this post.
