Finally! A Big Crackdown on Copyright Infringement! NOT.....

Post by General Mackevili »

This isn't really "news," so I'll put it here. I just noticed in the local news that they raided a Chinese business man's warehouse of incense. Why? Because it looked similar to another business man's incense! !

WTF. Really? There are entire floors in the major malls that sell every new Hollywood video under the sun on DVD, and the police waste their time to bust a guy that's selling similar looking incense sticks?

From the article, it seems that his logos don't even look quite close enough to charge him for stealing the other guy's intellectual property, so he's just being questioned, LoL.

Ok, that's all, I just think it's hilarious a guy's in trouble for selling similar looking incense sticks as another guy. The coppers have even turned it into a press conference with CTN. I guess we know who's connected and who's not.

I was glad to see this article. I predict that Cambodia will be like Singapore within 5 years, only cleaner.

And on this subject - I was until fairly recently anti-piracy but Cambodia has changed my mind. There is not one record store, DVD store, software store in the country selling legit product.

Then I tried to buy Microsoft Office from Microsoft. They won't take payments from Cambodia... their solution was to tell me to call Singapore (at my expense) and pay three times the online rate. At that point I explained I knew how to use a Torrent Client and Piratebay and that's exactly what I did. Outrageously the same cunts at Microsoft have a permanent rep in this country to bleat about fucking piracy. If they want to sell product here labels, software houses, etc. need to make that product available and at a fair price for the market. It's hilarious that in Thailand or Malaysia many things are incredibly cheap if they're legit product in order to compete with pirates but because the market is small here - all of them are on a price gouge of epic proportions. In China you can buy a legit Chinese version of Windows for $10... and China is substantially richer than Cambodia. And as for paying nearly $1,000 for Office... it's never going to happen.

The Cambodian police only acts upon complaint and even then, they will assess if either the plaintiff is willing to pay enough money or the accused has enough money to make any of this worthwhile. In this case, it is obvious that the plaintiff paid lots of money to get them to move, because the products in themselves are not worth much money. The case even gives me the impression that case is about something else and that the "imitation" products are just used as an excuse to make another point.
