Feminist dorms are set to transform Cambodia

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

The dorms and the girls that stay in them will only be as successful as the people and the system running them. Hopefully there is someone in charge that makes sure the girls hang up / fold up their cloths , dont leave wet towels and dirty clothes on the bed, dont leave food lying around for the ants and cockroaches.
If someone can make the girls do that then they take over my job cause I have been disappointingly unsuccessful at training my four girls.

Segregating the sexes and having young people live away from the families as a means to transform Cambodia. Sounds like the Khmer Rouge to me.

ok; they stay in dorms to get skills.. (from the photo it looks like any college dorm room)
how do they afford to stay in the dorms?
eat? survive ?
I always looked at all female dorms were set up to make the girls feel safe, at least when they are most vulnerable,( downtime & asleep)

Maybe i am thick but, i still don't see how staying in a all girl dorm will make equality between males and females
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

Through the (unmentioned) training that will accompany it. I imagine, again, that those that have been there longest were trained and they now pass that training on to newcomers by way of observable behaviour

I think it has been proven or at-least shown in results that girls taken out of a mixed school and moved to a girls only school, do better with their education,
so I can only assume that this will be the result of girls living in a girls only dorm.

It will also involve attitude adjustment and belief system adjustment. Empowering, not only through a school curriculum.

Some might call it indoctrination

transform it into what? it seems to be transforming itself at breakneck speed.

jeez the women already do all the work, i thought they had all the power already.
they certainly have in all the Khmer families I know.

the dudes just hand their checks to mama.

sure, people are enormously oppressed in KOW, but gender seems to be kind of irrelevant here comparatively speaking.
all those factory dorms are gender segregated as are private rooming houses.
so i don't really get what they hope to accomplish.

it just sounds like the average ngo come on for poverty porn donations to me.

The young women currently in the team we established live in a segregated dorm established by a Khmer Christian lady. It's mere coincidence that all the current team members live there, it's not one of our requirements, and we're actively providing other accommodation options (which some are choosing) as we don't support rice-faith expectations. Other team members have come from family homes, living at the pagoda, secular facilities etc.

Our team members must be in some form of education and get paid hours for study and exam prep/time. With one exception who is already attending university, all young women we give placements to were denied access to year 12, and most to year 9 education and exams, so that's their first focus.

We also provide a lot of recovery assistance (mental, emotional, medical) as all were trafficked.

Given the tone of the article, I'm unsure as to whether this now defines us as a feminist organisation. I tend to think we're just showing compassion to those who need it, and helping people find their voice and sense of agency.

I welcome any project that offers advanced education/training to impoverished rural Khmer. If Cambodia wants to join the world on its own terms then it must develop its impoverished rural Khmer human resources. I could care less if the dorms are labelled female or feminist. Open the doors and let the light in so the enlightened can exit into a new life.
