Female Belgian Tourist Scammed for $200 by Massage Girls on Street 172

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

This was sent to CEO by Mariona Smets:

I have send a message to the police:

Dear Police Commissariat of Phnomh Penh,
My name is Mariona Smets and I am scammed for 200 dollars by the massage salon next to the Red Fox 2, Street 172. Two girls swapped 2 hundred dollar bills into fake ones. I only discovered it the next day on my way to Kampot, when I wanted to pay with them. By that time it was too late to return. I have made a selfie with the two girls because they were so friendly... and instead of 5 dollar they asked 3,50... That was only because they wanted to be sure I wouldn’t open my wallet again. It was my first holiday in Phnom Penh and this was a very sad and bad experience. I sincerely hope you can do something about these criminal activities. As a teacher in Belgium I had to work very hard and save money to make this first trip to Cambodia.

It seems like I've read like a dozen of these "massage girls replaced my real $100 bills with fakes" stories just this year.

How did they swap the bills? She left her purse unsupervised and the girls exchanged them unbeknown to her? Or, the girls asked if they could swap them for newer bills? There was magic?

Same place got me for $350+. Ended up getting $300 back after going to police station, riding with cop to massage shop, pointing them out. Gave the head cop $10, so ended up with $290. I felt lucky actually to get that% back.

How exactly did they "get you"? Is there an MO that the rest of the wider community could be warned about??

Indeed you lucky. Or maybe that massage place aren't paying the cops tea money? Coz I've heard of a few instances where the cops won't do anything unless you give them much more than that.

Most common MO is that you take off your clothes and leave your wallet in your pocket. One lady massages you, her friend comes in for a chat, and goes though your pockets. If you are a woman, then you might have a handbag, so you should leave it next to your head where you can see it at all times.

I never have much money on me when I go to a massage dive, so they don't smile much when I leave. Those seedy places used to be kind of fun, but now if I want a real massage, I'd rather pay $10 for a regular place, or go to the blind people.

I've been for many massages. However none of the seedier ones. Perhaps I was lucky. I suppose it's easier to be distracted in the last 5 or 10 minutes at some places??? Who knows??? I will support the blind massages. They are truly excellent. And you can hide your wallet.
