Fake Monk Fashions

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

5. They don't give out bracelets or anything else

And that those who do the above are fake.

Is this correct?

If so I've seen a number of fakes in the last week or 2 down on or near the river and up towards st 51. I loudly heckled one who came into a restaurant I was eating in.

Plus two Philippina scammers on a bench on the riverside who complemented me on my t-shirt.
Yes, they are not Khmer monks, but I think they are Chinese monks.

(Real) Khmer monks also don't do any of the following - not like those fast and loose monks in Thailand ;)
[Headline: Hardliner tries to reform Thailand’s Buddhist monks behaving badly
Scandals involving drugs, financial impropriety and lavish lifestyles have tarnished the reputation of the country’s dominant religious order.]...
There have been monks with girlfriends (and boyfriends), drunk monks crashing cars, monks pocketing wads of cash meant for funerals and monks playing the stock market. And that’s not even mentioning the monks-on-meth or the selfie-snapping, Louis Vuitton bag-wielding, private jet-taking monk scandals of 2013.

In Laos, a Khmer friend thought it was shocking to see a monk driving an outboard on the river. I've seen a nun in Laos chew betel, spit and smoke a cigarette all at the same time .
So very possible that monks may behave differently elsewhere, but I don't think any "real" monks would go around selling trash to tourists on Riverside, whatever country they are from.(Not even the Chinese ) But then again, who's to say what is fake and what is real ? Question of perspective maybe?

Ive seen some poor people give a lot of money to monks. Like most religious figures, they strike me as beggars in uniform, selling hope and empty promises.

They aren't monks at all. You can usually see they wear normal clothes under the robes, and I saw one pulling off his robe one time, took him only a few seconds to change into a civilian. I read somewhere that many are brought over by criminal gangs and forced to do this. I punched one of them one day when I was going past in a tuk-tuk for a laugh.

There's a couple of these fake/Bozo's running around Snookyville. You go to take a picture of them and they turn away and leave as soon as possible.

Nothing new, and not confined to Cambodia...these scamming 'monks' are trained as part of a Chinese syndicate and flown to destinations around the world to con people out of their hard-earned cash.

Here's just a couple of the dozens of articles about them from NZ alone...

Not at the moment. I'm busy putting together my robe, wooden beads, bracelets and bowl for my daily dinnertime rounds. I'm a little slowed down today from the aftereffects of the swift kick in the shins that the security guy at La Crosette delivered last evening.
