Fake $100 bills from ATM. Urban myth or reality.

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Anyone seen a local posting on FB about getting fake bills from an ATM ? Or the ATMs are just targeting foreigners ?

"Khmer ATMs scaming people and getting comissions on COPY bills"

Up to now, all the stories I've seen involve either scammers, people who try to scam the bank, or victims who get their money "switched" outside the bank - in guesthouses or massage parlours etc.

Seriously, does anyone have any proof that bank ATMs are issuing false money, apart from gossip and rumour on social media ?
Give me proof, give me truth. This resembles an urban myth IMO.
What would you accept as "proof" other person after person saying "I got fake bills from an ATM in Cambodia"? How could they prove it?

I've posted this before, but it does happen sometimes.

Many banks use third party companies to service their ATM's, and their staff aren't incorruptible.

I had an incident with Acleda late 2017 where I got fake money over the counter, and upon making my complaint, the people at their head office/branch on Monivong explicitly told me that "if you have this from ATM we would believe you, because the ATM not serviced by our staff"

That said, I've used ATM of many banks here and never had so much as a torn note from one, let alone a fake.

I lost $30 to an ABA machine through e-cash thanks to a power cut. When I reported it to them and asked for a refund they asked me to go to the main branch to file a complaint. Remembering how they entrapped the Swiss bill switcher I didn't want to take any chances, so that $30 is lost and I only use the card now.

I could care less about $30 than having my photo taken and accused in the press for some quick PR points. Who knows how their cameras work during power failure and what they'd accuse me of. Fuck that, they're obviously on high alert against any complaining barang.
