Fake $100 bills from ATM. Urban myth or reality.

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. Maybe he got the two fake $100 bills, he immediately contacted the bank, they said they would investigate it, they got back to him a week or two later and refused to admit it was their fault.

Then he posted it on Facebook, a lot of people shared it, and the bank asked him to come in for a meeting.

He was feeling like hot shit, like the bank was going to cave due to the public pressure.

And instead the bank said "retract your claims or we will sue you and/or have you arrested." So he did.

This.

I was surprised to read that as well.
Wow. I never even looked into this particular case. ABA was pretty rough with this one.

In any event, this has occurred in the past, that is a fact...but to be clear, not from ABA ATMs. And no, I won't say from which bank(s) as I would rather avoid shit disturbing in the current climate in KoW.

That would have been a helluva juicy tidbit to leave out of his initial Bookface rant. And I don't think he mentioned anything like that, so I doubt that happened.

You think that 18 days after the went to their ATM he noticed two fake bills in his possession and then posted on Facebook that he got them from the ATM? That doesn't make much sense.

You think that he immediately noticed he fakes,

dutifully contacted the bank,

was told they would launch an immediate investigation,

heard nothing for 2 weeks until a representative contacted him to tell him he was full of shit and it wasn't thier fault.......

...and he would NOT mention that series of events as a part of his Facebook tale?

That doesn't make much sense.

I would also note that the ABA statement doesn't say "We haven't distributed any fake/counterfeit bills." It merely says they haven't distributed any bearing the word "COPY"

I'm pretty sure that it is implied. A note bearing the word "COPY" is by definition a fake bill.

You can't reasonably pick apart the minutia of an informal company statement made on Facebook, presumably by a non native English speaker.

how does one prove that any bills, ( fake ones) came out of any atm?

I mean even if u get one labeled "COPY" from an atm, noticed it immediately and immediately went into the bank to show them,
what proof is there you didn't pull a switch before u got inside?

your word against theirs and not hard to see whose word is right

Isn't there an ATM camera recording each access? Albeit if so, depending on how he grabbed the notes, it may not be clear whether they are fake..

After all this, I still believe this is not fake news. Scambodia is the very right place for this shit to happen. I just think ABA uses their power and money vs one poor dude for some fake bills from an ATM. And we all know poor dude have no chance to win no matter this real or fake.
