I recently came back from a trip to the US. I came back with $1,500 in hundreds. Riffling through them once back in Cambodia I noticed that one had a couple of small tears that wouldn't be acceptable in the KoW and another was tearing around the large security band.

The whole lot has been sitting in my desk since my return and today I thought I'd run to Acleda and see what they'd do, if anything, with the damaged bills if I tried to deposit them.

I was pretty disappointed with Acleda, they acted no better than a money changer out front of Psar TTP.

The teller quickly noticed the two damaged ones out of the $1,500. She kept flicking the tears and staring down at the bills. I asked her what she was going to do. She called over a supervisor, he flicked at the tears and tried to tell me that the one bill shouldn't be tearing around the security band or something like that.

I told him that I had just arrived from the US with these bills so they should be fine. Not once did the pair lift the bills up to look at the water marks or run their fingers along the bill to get a feel of it.

I asked them if the only way they can detect counterfeit bills is by sight? There's no UV light or ink test? All they did was look at the bills and flick at the small tears.

Anyway the supervisor hemmed and hawed and then told the teller to deposit the full amount and I got my receipt.

Can't we trust the banks here to be a tad more adept at counterfeit detection than the local money changers.

I know this is Cambodia but it's a bit hard to swallow almost getting rebuffed over a few tears when back home I could take a $20 bill, tear it in half and get a replacement bill from any bank.

If your 100$ bill is teared on the edge, it's value is only 90$ in Cambodia

A microscopic amount of super glue applied to the small tear with a cocktail stick holds it together and hard to see.

It's a foreign currency. The banks here can't just transfer damaged US bills to the Reserve for exchange like they can in the US.

I've deposited damaged bills into an ABA deposit machine as long as it registers and credits my account im happy. I tried to use the bills at various places they wouldn't take it until i put it in the ABA machine.

Now things are starting to take an interesting twist.
Did anyone notice that in the photo of the 2 fake bills, the serial numbers are the same ? Here's the thing, the serial number on my friends fake bill, as mentioned in my OP, is identical. How can that be?
Different banks, different ATM's.
Same number.....Same source ?
Does anyone know how ATM's are filled here? By individual banks or from one larger company?

That's a good idea. Acleda has deposit machines as well. I had forgotten all about them.

I think the '' non-fakes '' come from one source too.

UPDATE: ABA HAS PROVEN THAT THE US DOLLARS WERE NOT FAKE AND JEREMIE HAS RETRACTED HIS STATEMENT!
