Do expats really care about the locals?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Hard to beat the amount of views that nudity gets, with a human interest story...
I have a lot of sympathy for the locals. I feel more compassion for the Khmer than for any other tribe on the planet. Does that mean I do something for them? I do, but not much, but pretty much to the best of my ability. I hope to do more in the future though.

i spend about 1/2 my working hours assisting some local young men to create a honey producing cooperative.
i live in a 3m x 3 m metal hut. no fridge. $35 to go to PP and back. i have no regular job. thus only income from beekeeping.
does that count?

Is it something to do with an 'us and them' mentality. I often forget to draw a distinct line between myself and the locals.... where does compassion start and stop?

If you think that l they don't care about their own, I can assure you they think less about foreigners. However, I worked hard to achieve high level of spoken Khmer fluency in part to help me distinguish between those I like and those I don't. As for caring about all the locals that is beyond me in any country, even my own.
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.
