Expats needing a helping hand

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

I do think this place can make you jaded. I was accosted by some French guy near Central market the other day. Bag stolen, guesthouse kicking him out, embassy closed (new year) etc. Basically the usual spiel which I'm sure many of us have heard many times before. I was polite in giving him some advice and avoided the whole cash issue, but afterwards I felt like I'd been cold. Would I have reacted the same way 15 years ago? In a different city? Perhaps not. JB hit the nail on the head though.

@ Pieman, Are you saying that because he is not British and in hospital (yet), that he deserves what he gets. You seem to pick and choose who is worthy of saving in Cambodia. UK nationals are ok and down on their luck, and the other nationalities are scammers.

Btw, I would not give a dime to this French guy either. He is a long time scammer - story is I lost my passport, got robbed, embassy closed etc - it works best on weekends and holidays.
So, who needs a helping hand and who's a scammer ? Hello, some Brits are scammers too. Just be honest about this.

No, he's saying the guy is a twat not because he's French but because he operates year round approaching people and saying he just got robbed and kicked out of his guesthouse.

Oh dear, I am out of synch, unusual for me. I only help khmer and I am very fussy who gets helped (mailnly cos I am no jef bezos) i try to help tose who will later be able to help themselves. As far as expast go they have a support network. Embassies do have emergency numbers bu they do mucch. Nontheless that should be the first port of call for any expat. As weknow some embassies are slowewr tha a snail to get their shit together so i might help someone who was waiting for the embassy to do their stuuf, but I won't help someone who doesnt try the official channels first. COmes back to me not beigh jeff bezos and having limited funds to throw at twats who take girls back to their room and get mugged

PIEMAN wrote::stir: i suggested after a previous case we could have set up a little fund for persons who came on hard times,it was a no no as too many on here just live in a bubble and don,t give a flying fuck about other persons. :please:
There seems to me to be a big difference between expats who live normally and those who have been living off the rails either before coming to the Cambodia, or with every intention of doing so on arrival.

The expats seem to take care of their own pretty well. Most likely the ones living off the rails (and would be most unwilling to contribute) would be first in line to come on ‘hard times’ and use up such a fund.

Please enlighten me if this is a wrong assumption.
