There a hundreds of these people on Youtube now.

All posting similar smug, life in Kampot/Phuket/Danang/etc waffle with them wandering about letting strangers know how brilliant thier life is, how amazing and friendly the Thai/Khmer/Viets are along with the usual expat obsession with how much everything costs and general bragging about how they know all the best places and they're old timers etc.

What gives with these people? Are any of you bloggers? If so could you explain why you are doing it? I need to know. Thanks.

I recently came to the end of a YouTube experiment lasting a few months which indicated to me the very real possibility of the channel generating enough money to live on in the not too distant future. However, I stopped making videos a month ago for a number of reasons.

Why did I do it in the first place? I'm creative, and while I'm not particularly talented in any arena, as many here will attest, creativity is something I find very rewarding and an important aspect to a happy fulfilling life. Give me a guitar, a camera, something to write about..and I can get lost for hours, days, or even weeks. I'm currently writing a screenplay in a cheap guesthouse in the middle of Bangkok and time has no meaning - it's bliss!

Was I smug? Was I bragging? Did I waffle? Was I an annoying self-centered prick while making videos? I don't really care, I was doing it for me and not for anyone's approval.

Look I'm not knocking the genre entirely.

There are a few blogs that are of interest - there's a Khmer history one; in fact the dude posts on here sometimes. I forget his name. There's a thai one done by some English dude that is entertaining as well; he talks about Bangkok from the perspective of the last 30 years or so and even did one where he told a story. Its more the plethora of very unimaginative ones where it some dude wandering about talking about rent, utilities, latest visa news, where to buy a sim card, stuff like that. Or the really smug ones which usually involve an 'only farang in the village' type living his best life or whatever.

Ah, so what.

I guess its just a hobby.

I came across the most annoying young (maybe 22) TikTokker English guy, obviously a teacher, wondering around PP. He face was a cross between Gordon Ramsey and a crying baby.

I just wanted to slap him in the face.

People are bored and want to try new things

Perhaps they watched the baldy wanker or the other baldy wanker or the Somali wanker making six and seven figs from just blogging their travel and thought "I'll give that a go"

I haven't seen many of them myself - just a few minutes of the ones that get reported here - but seems like there's a saturation of this sort of mediocre content globally and very few are actually watchable and entertaining while at it - and those are the ones who can make it a living

I agree there are some annoying fcks on YouTube. My kids watch young - but often old enough to know better - people making absolute fools of themselves (in my jaded old eyes) or wasting a ton of food (which does legitimately bug me) just for clicks and likes.

I know it's not quite the same thing as you're talking about but I don't watch them when the kids aren't around.


So I reckon if they annoy you, don't watch 'em!

I would love to be involved in a YouTube channel about true crime stories in South East Asia.
True crime is HUGE on YouTube, people make serious money. It's not something I have the time to do on my own but I would love to be part of it.

Something along the lines of channels like That Chapter, CoffeeHouse Crime and 10 to Life would be awesome.
