Expat Youtubers

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Then he started a YT channel as an adjunct to his newsletter, making very detailed and advanced videos explaining how to invest in different stock markets and instruments, like futures trading in commodities and which stocks to short, etc, etc...

His YouTube "trading advice" videos average between 2 and 4,000 views each. Now, I guess he wasn't happy with that.

Last year he began venturing into True Crime commentary videos on YT.
Both interesting topics.
Do you have links to these channels?

So you believe a person should continue to do something they're not enjoying, or don't want to do, because you demand to be entertained? That comes across as a bit entitled and lacking in empathy somewhat, I think.
Was I smug? Was I bragging? Did I waffle? Was I an annoying self-centered prick while making videos? I don't really care, I was doing it for me and not for anyone's approval.

Ah The irony!
I started the channel primarily to have another creative outlet, and if people watched, great. If nobody wanted to watch, ok, they're not interested. I actually had many people go out of their way to tell me how awful and boring they thought the videos were, but it didn't concern me as I wasn't doing it for them, or anyone else.

Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful a few people seemed to enjoy some of the videos, that was quite rewarding. But I don't feel just because a small number of people were entertained by them it's now my duty to continue producing videos.

Are you this entitled in other areas of your life? Are you that guy in the bar at the end of the gig calling the band assholes because they won't play one more song?
With each reply you have flattered yourself!
OK.
Always leave them wanting a bit more.

FWIW, I enjoyed them.

Most of the travel Youtubers simply repeat the same old cliches of a particular destination to feed into the hopes and fears of their target traveller. For example, Medellin - crime, the world's most beautiful women (not true) and scopolamine.

Add in the endless segments of them talking into the camera and hamming it up, or nauseatingly effusive commentary about how "awesome" and "amaaaazing" their smashed avocado on toast was. WTF were they expecting?

I am sure many glean their so-called local knowledge from other videos. And they always seem to have managed to recruit a fantastic local 'friend', who speaks perfect English, and is clearly showing them around. That's probably a new career path, showing newbie influencers around town, thus allowing them to unashamedly pass off their 'discoveries' as the fruits of their own research.

I am a tad cynical about these matters...

I agree. Unless you're particularly charismatic, engaging, or witty, gliding around the same haunts with known outcomes or experiences will do little to garner viewer retention.

With so much content out there covering the same destinations I think one's advised to strike out a bit geographically, or perhaps dig a little deeper into the lives of the inhabitants in these places at least. Avocado on toast is avocado on toast wherever you are in the world.

I may pick up the GoPro and make a video in the next day or two, and being in the tourist ghetto of Bangkok it'll be an enjoyable challenge to find something here that hasn't been covered ad nauseam.

This guy from Cleveland Ohio inspired me to start my channel and interest in streaming … he has evolved from monger-type drunken adventures in Pattaya and worldwide to now a sober hiker/camper/philosopher. He is about to do the Appalachian Trail vlog & and live stream. He is an interesting dude.

head to the Oriental hotel an jump on the local boat, at the end, jump on another one, end of that another one, Tourists seldom see how thais still live near/on the riverside in the largest city in Thailand
than walk around
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

He managed to get in early and find a niche. His old stuff was quality. I live for this!! I find him a touch boring and generic now.
