Same and never had fake bills (yet), sometime a little bit torn but that's about allLaudJohn wrote: ↑Tue Jan 22, 2019 10:25 amI can get $4000 out of an ABA ATM in one transaction, done it many times.PhnomRon wrote: ↑Mon Jan 21, 2019 8:19 pmHis report doesn’t involve an ATM. Are these reports all down to scams, drama queens on social media, light-fingered ladies of the night, or is it the ATMs ?
If anyone spots other reports like this, please post.

I queried an old series of a $100 note which I suspected I got from an ABA atm, but couldn’t be sure. Nowhere would take the note, it was in good condition but it was an old series. They were adamant that it could not have been from them and offered to get me the ATM video of me withdrawing the cash to prove that it didn’t come from them. I didn’t pursue it as I wasn’t absolutely sure that it had come from them.
I cant understand how the video would prove anything but their willingness to provide it suggested that they were confident that they could prove specifically which notes were dispensed.
Dunno how.

The hologram is the difficult bit to fake and the easiest to check. Do it in front of the camera with the money in your hand

It's true that ABA has more queue time than Acleda OTC. Acleda compensates with its miles long queues outside any ATM caused by people who have a hard time spelling their own name. They accept any customer and the customers you encounter are thereafter.

ATMs have more than one camera than just the mugshot. Nowadays there is also a camera on the dispenser to catch customers that try to cheat the cash retraction mechanism. This is where you let the ATM present the cash, very carefully slip one note off the top/from the middle & then let the ATM take the rest back inside after whatever timeout it is set to 'retract'. You argue with the bank that the ATM didn't give you the cash & to refund you, bla bla. The ATM reconciliation would pick out that the amount dispensed versus the amount remaining/retracted doesn't stack up, and the video can be used to expose the fraud. I'm not 100% sure if they are able to track the serial numbers dispensed, but probably good enough to see visually an older style of note versus new I'd guess.khmerhamster wrote: ↑Tue Jan 22, 2019 12:20 pm I queried an old series of a $100 note which I suspected I got from an ABA atm, but couldn’t be sure. I found $300 sitting in the dispenser in an ATM in Sydney once. The bank couldn't even work out which customer made the withdrawal despite me providing the time and date I'd found it... let alone being able to detect if a note was real or fake.

That's pretty bad form from the bank - did they let you keep it then?
You can't discern fake bills from an ATM camera pretty certain unless its a godawful copy; but in this case $100 bill series have changed design, so you could see visually whether it was an older series or not in the bundle. I think the Op is pointing out he got a dodgy older style bill, whereas ABA are saying they only dispense new notes & thus fake or not, it could not have come from their ATM.

It is unlikely that any bank has a policy of giving out fake bills.
But there may be individuals who switch bills and pocket the good ones. It is a way of making a lot of money quick if they dont get caught.
There are possibly one or more small groups which are in on it together.

Actually, when I told my sister I found the money, she guilt tripped me into fessing up. But, knowing the bank would do nothing and just keep the money if I handed it in, I took it to the local police station instead. They followed up with the bank (who I suspect probably couldn't be bothered even trying to locate the person tbh) and after a month the police called me to go back and collect it. Clear conscience.

Re: Expat claims he got $2000 in fake bills at ABA bank on Monivong
Today I just counted out a large (to me) amount of cash from ABA.
I counted (after watching the electronic one) and checked the blue strip (which can be done within 2 ms) whilst also feeling the texture. In doing so I picked out the older notes (which are harder to check) and/or dirty or damaged newer notes.
I then turned the notes over and checked each one (you’d notice a fake by feel) and pulled any dirty or “questionable” notes. I then re-checked these.
The small pile of rejected notes ($1500) I handed to the cashier, who meanwhile had been doing other work and dealing with some customers simple issues, and without hesitation she replaced these notes with new notes after putting both through the counter, for me to see.
I then thanked her turned and could see a mountain of seated barang glaring at me!
