English Teacher Gary Beattie from the UK with HORRIFIC Leg Infection and Expired Visa Says British Embassy Won't Help

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Let's agree there are at least 2 ways to look at this:

1) No matter what he's done or not done in the past to get here, he's up shit's creek right now without a paddle. He's a man in a terrible position.

2) He's brought this upon himself to get in such fucked position, and some people, even people with a heart, owe him no sympathy for getting in this position.

3) Or maybe it's an elaborate scam. I really don't know.

None of us owe this individual anything, so let's not draw a line putting people who sympathise with him on that good side, and people who don't on the bad side.

Some will even blame that embassy. I think they've made it perfectly clear over the years that they're not in the business of lending down and out Brits money.

Feel free to take whatever stance you want on this fucked up story, but name calling and attacking other members won't be tolerated.

I just looked down at my ankles and can see some veins. I'll probably worry myself to sleep tonight.

Agreed, though for the record - I sympathize with him - we all do really stupid things; some of us are lucky enough to have people who will help when we do, some of us aren't. Having said that, I don't sympathize enough to help - there are a ton of people out there who need our help who didn't bring stuff on themselves like this and sadly, despite fantasies to the contrary I don't have unlimited resources to help people. So I pick and choose and that's not entirely fair but it's all I can do.

For the record too - I don't think this is a scam. I think this is some poor dope who overstayed in Asia and can't get home. There are a lot of them out there and over the next few decades, there will be a lot more. I don't even think a change in government would help - nobody cares back home about people who can't vote and a 15 year expat can't vote and hasn't paid taxes. I hope the people around him club together and send him home. I don't think anyone else is going to.

What happened? Did I miss anything? lol.
Agree with the Genera's first point , not so much with the second. Also agree with much of what the Grinch has written on this topic.

People always like to weigh court over these cases and a lot would have that he was a bad man. As if leaving the UK to try and start a new life somewhere makes you a bad person. Some make it, some don't. When I left Asia in 2006 it was a far far cheaper place than it is now. The wages haven't gone up at all in effect. This is what has really made a change in living standards for teachers in Cambodia. Not so much in Vietnam. There they pay double and charge you less. In KOW visa-versa.

The General is right about points -1- and -2- but this whole sorry tale is NOT in the least an elaborate scam, please believe that.

Quite a long time ago, when he was still earning $800 - $1,000 a month at Apple School - and spending less than half of that on himself - Gary was urged to scrape together
the fare to Blighty, collapse at Heathrow/Gatwick (not much acting would have been required, given the severity of his condition even then) and play things from
there ...

Will Vladimir manage to arrange for someone in Poipet find Gary and see how things are?

Whew, looks nothing like that- I think I'm in the clear. Tiny spider veins, perhaps.

Since when have you been able to look down and see your ankles?

You mean you saw them in the mirror right?

You would have been better advised telling the poor bastard to get on a bus to Phnom Penh and go to a clinic here. Varicose vein treatment isn't exactly the same as having a heart operation. Nor is it unaffordable for an English teacher.

In Poi Pet he is MUCH closer to Bangkok than PP where he can be treated better than in Cambodia an he himself said he worked in Thailand before;
sorry, No sympathy from me
In my book he fucked up on his own and he did it over years .
