English Teacher Gary Beattie from the UK with HORRIFIC Leg Infection and Expired Visa Says British Embassy Won't Help

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

A little harassment and pushing is needed - Gary was working for APPLE SCHOOL in Poipet for well over 2 years.

Check out the e-mail address and who is in charge ("Winner" I think) and even the phone number ]and tell them that this horrid story will be all over the internet and - ideally - in the Phnom Penh Post and the Cambodia Daily tooty sweety

Lol, but you're right.

Also agree with what everyone else has said, but feel sorry for him. It's tough when your health goes and you've got no backup.

Living in Cambodia with no health insurance  Anyone else doing this ? You might consider getting some. I'm not an insurance broker btw, but as an adult you are responsible for yourself and your general upkeep. The shit may or may not hit the fan, but you can't expect others to pick up the pieces.
That said, I never had ANY sort of insurance when I was young and traveling/living in SEA. It just never occurred to me.(But that's ok because I was young, stupid and in good health. ;) Lucky too when I think about it.)

The trouble is that for the vast majority of expats (in Cambodia and much of the rest of Asia where the unqualified ESL teacher roams) they don't have the money for health insurance. My BUPA policy works out at nearly $2,000 a year. That's 2 (or more) months salary for these guys. So they often go cheap on policies if they take them at all, then when the shit hits the fan they find they can't pay a $20,000 excess and the policy is worthless or they find that travel insurers don't pay on policies in countries where the insured is clearly resident, and so on... I have to admit I resent paying for health insurance and it's not that big an expense for me; if I made $800 a month... I think it would be more than I could afford. Thank god we're not in North America though or you could double that with ease...

And that's why insurance is such a hard sell to people... you only appreciate when you need it; otherwise all you do is pay in to cover other people's shared risks... of course the day you do need it, is the day you bitterly regret not having it.
