ELT or some other school

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

I agree that most people who work in foreigner-oriented bars can pick up the language easily, not to mention most of them have very good accent compare to those who go to study at a proper school. I, for instance, have really bad accent and i always had been amused how those people sound when they spoke English. I always wondered whether they have been living or traveling to English speaking countries.

However, most of them are not really good in writing and reading and that really make sense, because most of them didn't go to language school. It is really good for your friend that she wanted to go to study at school. There are some good writing books that could boost her studying. She should read them.

Otis, can you explain the point you are trying to make?

Do you vaguely remember what the thread is about (before you got on your White Knight horse)?

It's about learning English. Some guy joked about sending the student to a girly-bar, as they pick it up quickly.

I responded, implying that it is regarded by most as not quite the best envrionment for sending someoen you acre about into to learn English. But, I must be wrong, given all the children whose parents put them in schools, language institutes and universities.

You should enlighten the MoE.

NOTE: there was never an exercise in comparing the linguistic talents of bargirls with the correpsonding (Khmer) linguistic skills of foreigners. But you did not let that stop you from going down straw-man lane.

But it was kind of interesting that you portrayed all these ladies as honorable decent types, whilst simultaneously portraying their expat customers as somewhat less than praiseworthy. So generalising about bargirls is no-go, but generalising about the people that help them make a living, that's acceptable and academically sound?

Hey, but it's OK, obviously all the expats are culturally-insensitive, lazy, stupid dolts, and the ladies are nuns merely suffering in silence whilst completing their Master's theses in Applied Linguistics and Genital Hygiene, right?

And obviously, none of them have ever had an STD, and even if they did, it's the expat guy's fault, right?

Seriously, is there something you're not telling us here?

Delusional.

I hear Biliary Hillary needs people like you.

No, it's not, and until you insert the hyphen, it's completely incorrect, and is just bad usage.

I'm not looking down at bargirls, I'm merely saying that I wouldn't want my partner or daughter to ever have to be in one to learn English, too many associated negative points.

I can't imagine were you got the above notions from what I said. Both bargirls and barangs in my view are pretty much equally OK. Neither should be trash-talked. Bargrils just have to be more agile and work harder all around. They must cure a disease quite common in Cambo, pneumonia. Usually pronounced no-money.
