Elite - Dangerous

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Elite - Dangerous

Post by EdinWigan »

I have never been one to play computer games, or games consoles, for that matter. Well that is with the exception, in the 1980's of a game called 'Elite'

A basic game, centred around travelling about space and trading about 20 different products, from diamonds and gold to really basic stuff like food or if you were brave illegal weapons.

Very basic stick graphics but I would play for hours.

Has there ever been a single computer game that really caught hold of you?

Now, some 30 years later:

It is back but this time graphically awesome.

I wonder if I will become just as hooked on this one.

Of course being rubbish at such games, I will need to find a cheat to give me billions of credits, so I can have the very best weapons, fastest space ship etc... I really can't be bothered with all that earning it, I will want it NOW!

Will my future be spent walking and cycling around Siem Reap, killing baddies in my universal space adventure game, then meeting friends in the evening for a few cold beers and chat? I really do hope so :Yahoo!:

What about you? Is it a singe computer game or and all enveloping hobby that fills your days?

I also look forward to settling down with a glass of wine and a good CEO thread, in the early evening and not realising that it is the middle of the night there and your all asleep, Hey Ho ! ! !

I haven't played video games in years, but back in the day, I used to spend hours and hours online playing Age Of Empire II (The Conquerors expansion pack). Man, that shit was awesome. History, perfectly balanced civilizations, economy building, water waging... Also spent a lot of hours playing Tomb Raider 2 and Metal Gear Solid (on the original PlayStation). Probably spend a lot of hours on a few other PlayStation games.

I spent many happy hours playing Elite. Made it as far as level 5 I think, then learned of the hack to bump myself up to Elite :-) Spent even more hours roaming the galaxy alternating between honest trading and more nefarious activities. The next game I spent much time on was Doom, then Duke Nukem and then decades of nothing until this year and Clash of Clans.

Anyone interested in a forum clan?

Somehow I doubt the new Elite will run on my netbook so won't be playing any time soon. I got a real buzz out of matching the space station rotation to be able to dock. Ah, those were the days!

I've been a Sid Meier's Civilization player since version 1, still addicted.

In the Doom era, ever play Descent? That was some serious gaming, first true 3D gaming experience for me.
